South India with Jasmine Trails

South India

Click map to enlarge

The tapering southern wedge of the subcontinent that gives India its distinct and unique shape, is surrounded by the Arabian sea in the west, the Bay of Bengal in the east and the Indian Ocean in the south. Major dynastic kingdoms reigned here from ancient times, leaving behind a fabulous heritage of over three millennia, wonderfully preserved and so vastly different from North India.

Some of the most historic and finest literary works, music and dance traditions came out of southern India. Ancient temple rituals still survive in this deeply religious region and can be seen in practice in the colossal temples, built centuries ago.

A long history of maritime trade brought foreign cultures and religions to the shores of southern India, all of which were assimilated over time giving rise to unique cuisine, architecture and religious practices in coastal areas.

Apart from incredible architectural wonders, the region has stunning natural beauty to offer the traveller, with its serene coastlines, backwaters and densely forested mountain ranges that are home to unique flora and fauna.

Here are just a few of the places Jasmine Trails would like to show you in South India. Click on the destination images below to know all about them.

THE BACKWATERS

Drifting in a houseboat through the tranquil backwaters, a labyrinthine system of palm fringed canals, rivers, lakes and lagoons, is undoubtedly the highlight of a trip to Kerala. Stunningly green paddy fields, the smiling faces of local villagers and an unhurried pace of life afford the traveller a leisurely way to soak in nature at its best. Delectable Kerala cuisine served onboard adds to the experience. Overnight or do a day cruise on the houseboat. COCHIN

Kochi, ‘The Queen of the Arabian Sea’ is one of the oldest cosmopolitan port cities in the world.  Maritime trade flourished with Arabia and China, and in the early 16th C the first European traders, the Portuguese, arrived on its shores drawn by exotic spices and sandalwood. Kochi not only welcomed and endured all who came to trade and rule, but also assimilated the new cultures and cuisines. This makes Kochi a fabulously interesting, multicultural hotspot. Historic sites like the Mattancherry Palace, Saint Francis Church, the Pardesi Synagogue and Chinese fishing nets weave in beautifully with modern art galleries, antique shops and boho chic cafés. Truly an exciting destination!

HYDERABAD

HYDERABAD

Hyderabad offers a brilliant panorama of four hundred years of fascinating history and culture. The incredible wealth of the princely state, ruled by the Nizams, was possible because of their world-famous diamond mines in Golconda. Apart from its brilliant architectural wonders and colourful markets, the city’s cuisine borders on the legendary and makes up an important part of the Hyderabadi experience. Get a taste of royal opulence with a stay in a former palace of the Nizams.

Tanjore

TANJORE

Capital of the powerful, sea-faring Chola dynasty, Tanjore was an important centre of religion, art, dance and architecture in the 10th -11th Century. The most exemplary masterpiece of this golden era is the Brihadesehwara temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Pillared verandas, subsidiary shrines, frescoes, monumental gateways and exquisite carvings make up this massive complex. The most impressive feature is the vimana, the towering superstructure over the sanctum. The Chola period is also remarkable for its bronzes and one can still see Gods come alive in the hands of a few remaining artisans, a must-do while visiting.

HAMPI
