Billy the Kid, the Old West outlaw who killed at least three lawmen and tried to cut a deal from jail with territorial authorities, won't be pardoned, Gov. Bill Richardson said Friday, nearly 130 years after the gunslinger's death.

Englishman John Tunstall was a cattle rancher and merchant in Lincoln County, New Mexico, who hired Billy the Kid in 1877 to work on his ranch. Tunstall's murder in 1878, by members of the Murphy-Dolan gang, was the catalyst that ignited the Lincoln County War.
Doc Scurlock ... gunfighter, cowboy, outlaw, associate of Billy the Kid and a key participant in the Bloody Lincoln County War. In 1880 he gave away his guns, moved to Tascosa where he settled down with a new wife and growing family. Eventually moving to Eastland County in 1919, Scurlock opened a candy store where he quietly lived out his remaining years, afraid he was still wanted by the law in NM.:
