Absolute pitch and tone language - Two new studies
Päivämäärä
2009Two new studies provide evidence in favor of the hypothesis that absolute pitch is strongly influenced by a speech-related critical period. The first study examined the prevalence of absolute pitch among students in at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, as a function of age of onset of musical training, ethnicity, fluency in speaking a tone language, and country of early music education. Among those of East Asian ethnicity, performance on a test of absolute pitch was strongly correlated with fluency in speaking a tone language. The advantage of early onset of musical training did not interact statistically with the effects of tone language fluency, and further analyses showed that the results could not be explained by country of early music education. The second study investigated the pitch ranges of female speech in two relatively isolated villages in China. These pitch ranges clustered within each village, but differed significantly across the villages, indicating that, at least for speakers of tone language, the pitch range of speech is heavily influenced by an absolute pitch template that is developed through long term exposure to speech in the environment. Implications of these findings are discussed.

Determination of absolute internal conversion coefficients using the SAGE spectrometer
Sorri, Juha; Greenlees, Paul; Papadakis, Philippos; Konki, Joonas; Cox, Daniel; Auranen, Kalle; Partanen, Jari; Sandzelius, Mikael; Pakarinen, Janne; Rahkila, Panu; Uusitalo, Juha; Herzberg, R.-D.; Smallcombe, J.; Davies, P.J.; Barton, C.J.; Jenkins, D.G. (Elsevier B.V., 2016)A non-reference based method to determine internal conversion coefficients using the SAGE spectrometer is carried out for transitions in the nuclei of 154Sm, 152Sm and 166Yb. The Normalised-Peak-to-Gamma method is in general ... -
The ion-optical design of the MARA recoil separator and absolute transmission measurements of the RITU gas-filled recoil separator
Sarén, Jan (University of Jyväskylä, 2011)In this thesis work, the use of two complementary recoil separators for studies of nuclear structure via fusion-evaporation reactions are discussed. The design and the main ion-optical properties of the vacuum-mode ... -
High-Precision Q-Value Measurement Confirms the Potential of 135Cs for Absolute Antineutrino Mass Scale Determination
de Roubin, A.; Kostensalo, J.; Eronen, T.; Canete, L.; de Groote, R. P.; Jokinen, A.; Kankainen, A.; Nesterenko, D. A.; Moore, I. D.; Rinta-Antila, S.; Suhonen, J.; Vilén, M (American Physical Society, 2020)The ground-state-to-ground-state β-decay Q value of 135Cs(7/2+)→135Ba(3/2+) has been directly measured for the first time. The measurement was done utilizing both the phase-imaging ion-cyclotron resonance technique and the ... -

On the inverse absolute continuity of quasiconformal mappings on hypersurfaces
Ntalampekos, Dimitrios; Romney, Matthew (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2021)We construct quasiconformal mappings f:R3→R3 for which there is a Borel set E⊂R2×{0} of positive Lebesgue 2-measure whose image f(E) has Hausdorff 2-measure zero. This gives a solution to the open problem of inverse absolute ...
