NORTH CASCADES, Wash. – National Geographic is recognizing North Cascades National Park as one of the ten best for people who want to avoid the summer crowds.
The park east of Mount Baker is known as the “American Alps” for its rugged peaks, wildflower meadows, remote lakes and old growth forests.
National Geographic highlights its 400 miles of hiking trails, including the Desolation Peak Trail that leads to the lookout cabin where Jack Kerouac spent a summer.
About 30,000 people visited North Cascades last year, just 2% of the annual traffic at Mount Ranier National Park.
