This peanut butter banana dog ice cream recipe is a regular in our house during the same, as I just can’t say no to those begging eyes. And while a bite of store-bought human ice cream isn’t toxic to canines, it can create some unwelcome side effects.

Homemade dog ice cream treats are a much better option. They’re safe, they taste good, and they’re WAY cheaper than any doggie ice creams you can find at the store like the Frosty Paws doggie desserts!

Why You’ll Love This Homemade Dog Ice Cream

Here are a few reasons to love this pup ice cream recipe.

  • Only 3 ingredients. And you may already have them in the kitchen. Banana, peanut butter, and yogurt are all you’ll need.
  • Safe for humans and dogs. You can snack on these alongside your four-legged best friend.
  • Perfect treat for summer. Dogs got hot in the summer too and these are the perfect treat for them, just as ice cream is a welcome treat for humans on hot days.

Is Ice Cream Safe For Dogs?

The regular ice cream that humans eat should not be given to dogs, since it’s typically both high in sugar and dairy. Since dogs have different digestive systems than we do, it’s hard for them to consume lactose and eating regular ice cream may result in gas, diarrhea, etc.

This homemade dog ice cream is made with dog-friendly ingredients, so they can have a sweet treat without any of the risks. (Though you should always introduce new foods slowly, as all dogs are different.)

Common Questions

Can dogs eat peanut butter?

Yes, peanut butter is a treat that most dogs LOVE. However, be sure to avoid brands that contain xylitol – this additive is not dog-friendly and should be avoided. I recommend using creamy, natural peanut butter in this recipe. Just be sure to check the ingredient list! Most dogs adore anything with peanut butter flavor.

Can dogs eat bananas?

Bananas are another treat that most dogs love. Most dogs will have no problem enjoying this low calorie treat. However, bananas do contain quite a bit of sugar, so it’s a good idea to only feed your dogs small amounts of banana – like what’s used in this recipe.

Can humans eat this dog ice cream?

Of course! Everything in this recipe is both human-safe and dog-safe! Plus, you’ll love the flavors of this frozen dessert.

Where can I find molds for dog ice cream?

Molds with a paw shape like the ones I used can be found on Amazon. You can also find ones shaped like little bones. If you don’t have either on hand, don’t worry – an ice cube tray will work just fine!

Proper Storage

Once the treats have frozen, you can pop them out of the mold and transfer them to a ziploc bag or other freezer-safe container. They’ll last for up to 3 weeks, so you can just grab one whenever your pooch needs a treat on a hot day!

I do make these for our Labrador Retriever. Molly loves them. She comes to me and puts her head on my leg and looks at me with those big brown eyes and wants her “Frosty Paws.” I sometimes add a little honey in the blender when I am mixing them.

    1. Hi Michele. Any creamy peanut butter will work. We usually have natural Jif and organic Kirklands from Costco here.
