TUMWATER, Wash. - A woman was killed when a semi truck slammed into her car at freeway speed as she was stopped on the shoulder of Interstate 5 in Thurston County, the Washington State Patrol reported.
State troopers responded to the scene, northbound I-5 at milepost 102, at about 3:50 a.m. Friday after receiving reports of a serious crash.
The woman was found dead at the scene. Her name was withheld pending notification of her next of kin.
A preliminary investigation found that the woman had pulled over and stopped on the right shoulder of the freeway when her 1991 Geo Metro developed a mechanical problem. She was parked there when the semi truck drove onto the shoulder and rear-ended her car while traveling at about 58 mph.
The woman's car was thrown 100 feet by the force of the impact and was completely destroyed in the crash.
Northbound lanes of I-5 were closed in the area in the aftermath of the collision but have now reopened.
