The Straits Times Car of the Year is known for its fair and trustworthy judgments. It focuses only on the first generation of each vehicle. Among 40 new cars released in Singapore from mid-November 2022 to mid-November 2023, the IONIQ 5 was a finalist. The Straits Times assessed these cars in nine areas. The areas include practicality, economy, performance, handling, efficiency, design, ride quality, build quality, and X-factor, which includes unique qualities.

The IONIQ 5 excelled in several categories, notably practicality, affordability, and design, achieving 399 points. This score put it 40.5 points ahead of the second-place finisher. Additionally, the IONIQ 5 is the first Hyundai model to receive the Straits Times Car of the Year award.

Lynn Tan, a judge for The Straits Times Car of the Year, called IONIQ 5 an “all-rounder of a car.” She noted its “retro-inspired yet futuristic design and surprisingly practical space.”

Another judge, Dr. Kong Yongyao, described the Hyundai as “a resounding triumph of imagination, ambition, and execution.”

Sgcarmart, Singapore’s largest car-selling platform, also awarded the IONIQ 5 with a Car of the Year title. Out of 76 cars in 26 categories, the IONIQ 5 emerged as the winner in the Electric SUV category and clinched Sgcarmart’s sole Car of the Year award for 2023. Sgcarmart’s evaluation criteria focus on assessing each manufacturer’s innovation and effort in enhancing their cars in design, efficiency, versatility, and value for money.

Based on eight evaluation criteria, the most significant aspect of Sgcarmart’s 2023 Car of the Year award is that consumer votes constitute about 65 percent of the total score.

“The IONIQ 5 absolutely deserves to be crowned Sgcarmart Car of the Year. It’s easy to drive, sensible to use, fairly quick to charge, and this addresses everything a typical family needs. What elevates the IONIQ 5 is its value – considering its price point and positioning, it delivers a level of quality and refinement that exceeds expectations.”

Hyundai Motor is Ready to be Top EV Brand

Hyundai Motor anticipates that these recent awards, along with the opening of the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS), will boost its standing as a top electric vehicle (EV) brand in the region.

In Singapore’s Jurong Innovation District, HMGICS is dedicated to exploring and showcasing future mobility centered around human needs. Operational since early 2023, the center can produce up to 30,000 EVs yearly. The production includes models like the IONIQ 5 and autonomous robotaxis.

Hyundai Motor regards the IONIQ 5’s dual awards as a validation of its dedication to producing future mobility solutions and advancing technological innovation. The company aims to use this success to strengthen its status as a leading brand in the electric vehicle (EV) market.
