  • Minoxidil enhances hair growth by prolonging the anagen phase and induces new hair growth in androgenetic alopecia (AGA), whereas retinol significantly improves scalp skin condition and promotes hair growth. We investigated the combined effects of minoxidil and retinol on human hair growth in vitro and on cultured human dermal papilla cells (DPCs) and epidermal keratinocytes (HaCaT). The combination of minoxidil and retinol additively promoted hair growth in hair follicle organ cultures. In addition, minoxidil plus retinol more effectively elevated phosphorylated Erk, phosphorylated Akt levels, and the Bcl-2/Bax ratio than minoxidil alone in DPCs and HaCaT. We found that the significant hair shaft elongation demonstrated after minoxidil plus retinol treatment would depend on the dual kinetics associated with the activations of Erk- and Akt-dependent pathways and the prevention of apoptosis by increasing the Bcl-2/Bax ratio.

  • 3-Deoxysappanchalcone (3-DSC) has been reported to possess anti-allergic, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. In the present study, we investigated the effects of 3-DSC on the proliferation of human hair follicle dermal papilla cells (HDPCs) and mouse hair growth in vivo. A real-time cell analyzer system, luciferase assay, Western blot and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were employed to measure the biochemical changes occurring in HDPCs in response to 3-DSC treatment. The effect of 3-DSC on hair growth in C57BL/6 mice was also examined. 3-DSC promoted the proliferation of HDPCs, similar to Tofacitinib, an inhibitor of janus-activated kinase (JAK). 3-DSC promoted phosphorylation of ${\beta}$-catenin and transcriptional activation of the T-cell factor. In addition, 3-DSC potentiated interleukin-6 (IL-6)-induced phosphorylation and subsequent transactivation of signal transducer and activator of transcription-3 (STAT3), thereby increasing the expression of cyclin-dependent kinase-4 (Cdk4), fibroblast growth factor (FGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). On the contrary, 3-DSC attenuated STAT6 mRNA expression and IL4-induced STAT6 phosphorylation in HDPCs.   • Shearography was developed by Leendertz based on the concept to derive derivative for deformation after configuring proper optical interferometry. Where defect exists at rigid object, external force will create stress concentration. Rigid body deformation does not involve change in strain rate, and shearography method will be highly suitable to measure the defect in object, and it has less influence from disturbance. In this paper, shearography is used to measure wall-thinning defect according to internal temperature change in pipeline for circulation system of nuclear power plant. 2.5 inch pipeline specimen is prepared, and wall-thinning depth is 50% and 75%, respectively. Using pipeline circulation system, internal temperature of pipeline specimen to 50 ∼ 200 is changed 50, and blower is used to quench the specimen for measuring defect shape. With the experiment results, 50%,75% of the depth of the defect is possible to measure the size and shape. Thus, the actual circulatory system can be measured by applying the wall thinning defects.

  • We have investigated the influence of Si-cap thickness and Ge segregation on the device properties of Si/SiGe/Si heterostructure pMOSFETs to optimize the device design. It is found that the thermal gate-oxide quality is degraded abruptly during the Si-cap thinning because Ge segregation proceeds rapidly beyond a certain critical thickness. However, it is noted that the significant increase in interface state density ( Dit) occurs only if the Ge concentration at the oxide interface is high enough (∼1.8×10 22 cm -3). If Dit is kept low (<5.0×10 10 cm -2 eV -1), a thinner Si cap improves device's transconductance, on-state current, threshold voltage, and subthreshold swing owing to the larger oxide-to-channel capacitance, less parallel channel effect, and higher degree of valence band bending. Finally, the Si-cap thickness should be controlled precisely to locate the buried channel as close as possible to the oxide as long as the minimum thickness for a low Dit is maintained.
