With my open lungsseems to be following in the footsteps of How to save a dead friend, and despite the raw personal experience of love in the face of death and the political context of Russia, there seems to be something missing, or perhaps on the contrary something overwhelming the main narrative.
It seems that the documentary doesn’t succeed in separating director’s life and the goal / the final message of the movie. Without an elaborate voice off, with the excess of intimate scenes that are present throughout the whole piece and leave us feeling a bit as a voyeur, entering someone’s very private space, as well as some unnecessary footage of honeymoon walks and nature, it all feels more…

i admire the courage of filming your life without filters, but this felt more like a vlog with too much personal content (especially the sex scenes) that i didn’t need to see (at least not that often). it was a bit incoherent and messy, and i didn’t see a clear theme. it seemed like just random moments from the filmmaker's life with modern russia in the background. idk.

Presented at the Chéries-Chéris festival in Paris, With My Open Lungs delves into the many facets of the lives of two Russian women, Yaroslava and Yana, as they confront cancer, war, divorce, migration, and above all, love. This lesbian documentary aims to be an intimate, almost brutally honest, account of sapphic love in a Russia at war. Yet, despite the depth and breadth of the themes it covers, the film seems scattered, skimming the surface without fully exploring the essence of these subjects.
The film attempts to tackle existential questions, but these grand, weighty themes ultimately overshadow the characters. In trying to capture life in its entirety, the documentary loses cohesion. Yana Sad’s intention is admirable and sincere, yet the…

PÖFF28 #7stylistically a very interesting doc about lesbian lovers living in and planning to escape from Russia after the beginning of the war. the fact that it is exclusively filmed on phones gives everything a haunting found footage-like quality. the film works because of its unfiltered rawness - we even see the characters have sex multiple times. neither of these women are afraid of the camera and recognize the power art holds. it gets messy in the last third as keeping a pace and finding an ending seems like a chore. the bleakness of Russia is harrowing.
