1. Thom Yorke - Live at the Horseshoe Tavern, Toronto (March 1995)

Radiohead celebrated the 30th birthday of The Bends (my fave Radiohead album) by releasing this Thom solo set from 1995. Pretty, pretty good.

Loved this 3 Stacks interview with Hanif Abdurraqib and the photos by Erik Carter. It touches on some of the stuff I mentioned a few posts ago.

  3. Broken Social Scene | “Cause = Time” | House Of Strombo

If I were to make a list of my 10 favorite songs of all time, this song would probably be on it, especially if it included the extended intro jam featured here. Absolute perfection.

  4. Best Coast - “California Nights” (Live at WFUV)

Thi is my go to tune whenever I’m on the West Coast. I love it when the drums and bass kick in.

I was so excited when Snoop and Dre seemingly dropped this out the ether just before the holidays. I was heading to Cali for the Xmas break and had been listening to some old Dre to get myself back in that headspace and then, boom, here’s a new Dre-produced album from Snoop. Sadly, these tracks have no sauce. “Last Dance With Mary Jane” is truly one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard. They just lifted the chorus straight from TP’s song. There’s zero creativity in it. And as much as I love Snoop, he’s 53 years old so hearing him rap about the same old things - bitches, getting laid, getting high, etc. - just kind of rings hollow (Well, except the getting high part). I thought it was a great dichotomy with the interviews Andre 3000 has done recently, where he said that at 49 years-old it wouldn’t feel authentic form him to rap about the same things he did in his 20’s. And far be it from me to tell Snoop how to feel or what to do, but 3 Stacks seemed to come off better here.

So says the old white guy.

  6. Khruangbin - People Everywhere (Still Alive) [Live at Stubbs]

I distinctly remember where I was when I first heard this song over the summer. I was sitting by our neighborhood pool relaxing when I was simultaneously getting lost in these riffs while also having my mind blown by what I was hearing. I only discovered Khruangbin this year and it’s right in my wheelhouse. I have mega playlist of instrumental hip-hop from people like Pete Rock, Diamond D, Dre, Jazzy Jeff (Yes, him. He’s good!), Madlib, Lord Finesse and many more. Khruangbin easily fits into this aesthetic, especially since their drummer is a hip-hop producer.

  7. This Is When The Sky Gets Big

I am relatively new to This is the Kit but I’ve been lucky enough to see them twice in the last year and half and they’ve blown me away both times. I’ve had this tune on repeat for a while now.

  8. Khruangbin & Leon Bridges - B-Side (Official Video)

Had this song stuck in my head for the last few days. It’s got the sauce.

  9. Destroyer - Live at Tulips, Fort Worth 5/16/2022

Kind of obsessed with Destroyer lately. Bought tickets to go see him open for Father John Misty next year.

“Be Thankful For What You Got” - Sade, Nakano SunPlaza, Tokyo, Japan, May 11, 1986

As far as I know, Sade never got around to recording William DeVaughn’s classic “Be Thankful For What You Got” in the studio — but on this live tape in Tokyo from 1986, it sounds tailor-made for the group. Lush and smooth, yeah, but with a hint of deep melancholy that takes it to another level. Things are tough all over, but remember brothers and sisters, you can still stand tall. Everyday is all there is. Happy Thanksgiving?

Sade Says: What I like personally when I listen to other people’s music is when the music makes you feel something. Sad, happy, makes you want to dance, makes you feel elated. Sadness in songs is positive because it brings it out of you; it brings the sadness out. It’s not that the song makes you feel sad, the sadness is already there. The song just makes you recognize it.

    GREAT find. This is incredible.
