Getting Schooled by the Maestro of Hong Kong Action - Sammo Hung Masterclass: "My Beloved Bodyguard"

On November 1, the legendary Hong Kong actor-director-producer-action choreographer Sammo Hung appeared at the 37th Tokyo International Film Festival to lead a Masterclass following a screening of his 2016 film My Beloved Bodyguard. Still brimming with confidence and humor at 72 years old, Hung regaled a captivated audience with stories of his pioneering martial arts films and costars over the past 60 years, with the Masterclass a rare chance for fans to relive history in the making.

A Holiday Gift from Alfonso CuarĂłn - "An Almost Christmas Story" Talk Show

Just after the Tokyo International Film Festival announced the lineup for its 37th edition in late September, an email arrived from Alfonso Cuarón, the OscarŽ-winning filmmaker of Gravity (2013) and Roma (2018). He said he would be visiting Tokyo during TIFF for the promotion of his Apple TV+ series Disclaimer (2024), and asked if the festival would be interested in screening a little Christmas film he produced. Would they ever! TIFF quickly secured a venue on November 4.

Kurosawa Akira Award Recipients Pay Tribute to Past Masters - Kurosawa Akira Award Winners' Press Conference

The two recipients of the 37th Tokyo International Film’s Festival Kurosawa Akira Award sat down with the press on November 5, ahead of the official award ceremony at the Imperial Hotel, just steps away from TIFF’s main venue in Hibiya. Miyake Sho of Japan and Fu Tien-yu of Taiwan are both mid-career filmmakers, and have already received attention and awards for their work. But neither imagined they would be honored with the Kurosawa Akira Award, which promotes the renowned auteur’s…

Thieves Like Us - "Traffic" Q&A Session

Romanian director Teodora Ana Mihai’s Traffic, which had its Asian premiere in the Competition section of the 37th Tokyo International Film Festival, is based on a true story that made world headlines in 2012. During a post-screening Q&A session on November 4, Mihai pointed out that she and her screenwriter, acclaimed director Cristian Mungiu, took many liberties with the original story as related in the press. “It was meant to be very symbolic,” she said. “It uses tragicomedy to reach an audience…

An Odyssean Journey Amid War (and Magic Powder) - "Adios Amigo" Q&A Session

Billed as a Western, Adios Amigo often reminds one of the grimy visual textures of Sergio Leone’s films, and in a late scene, borrows from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly with a tableau that’s usually referred to as a “Mexican standoff.” During a post-screening Q&A session on November 4 at the 37th Tokyo International Film Festival, where the Colombian film is playing in the Competition section, an audience member said that he had bought a ticket expressly because of the movie’s poster,…

Empowering Female Filmmakers Enriches Everyone - Symposium on Women's Empowerment: Women Directors Keep Paving the Way

One of the highlights of the new Women’s Empowerment section, launched with deserved fanfare at the 37th Tokyo International Film Festival, was a full day of screenings and discussions addressing the past, present and future of female filmmakers. Entitled Women Directors Keep Paving the Way and hosted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government with co-host UNIJAPAN, the symposium attracted a huge crowd and opened up a much-needed dialogue celebrating women’s achievements, considering the ongoing challenges faced by women in film, as…

Almost 18 months after seeing it at Tokyo International Film Festival in 2022, the film has finally been released in theaters and I've finally had the chance to watch it again. And it is just as amazing to watch on a second viewing as it was the first.

A truly wonderful fourth wall-breaking art piece about what it means to love and grieve, with the screening followed by GEZAN doing a roundtable talk where they talked about behind the scenes…

Tokyo International Film Festival 2023 #1

im so grateful to have been able to attend the premiere of this film which was followed by a Q&A with the director and stars!

a great story about an ex-shooter who tries to keep the security of his factory intact - he endures trial after trial, many of which are personal, as he juggles his personal and professional life.

the final shootout is incredibly tense and very well shot, like the rest of the film

a movie about the violence in the underground world of the philippines. during the post-screening qna session, the director mentioned that violence has been very normalized in the lives of the people of the philippines, that he felt the urge as a storyteller to bring out this topic on the screen and encourage the discussion on this topic. one appreciation-worthy effort.

Tokyo International Film Festival 2023 #8

Let this movie lull you into its slow pacing and it’s a fascinating experience, with layers to its metaphors on the way war seeps even into the most peaceful of moments and crashes every life it ever even indirectly comes into contact with. The pain can’t be escaped. Beautiful imagery too.

It definitely overstays it’s welcome and is VERY slow, but I found myself engaged.

Leila is an Iranian female judoka who is asked to throw a match or withdraw at an international competition in order not to risk fighting against an Israeli judoka.

I had expected a sport film but it was in fact a taut edge-of-your seat thriller. So many great effective choices including the decision to film in black and white with an unusual aspect ratio.

This is an American production, co-directed by an Israeli and an Iranian and filmed in Tbilisi,…

Helene is a strong, intelligent Jewish woman in Nazi Germany. She can pass as aryan but what’s the real cost of doing so?

Powerful story with an excellent performance by the lead actress.

He introduced new elements into “Tibetan Movies” but we lost him… I share a similar wish with Xu.
