Dune

Dune

Third viewing.

It’s got an awesome cast — MacLachlan in particular carries it very well — and even though the sandworms reminded Ebert too much of Kermit the Frog, I thought they were pretty scary this time.

But I can see why Lynch hated all the voiceovers; many of them are pointless. I’ve always been underwhelmed when the romance between MacLachlan and Sean Young comes out of nowhere; they have zero chemistry. And by the time of those climactic battle scenes, I always find myself tuning out.

Maybe it’s not as terrible as I’ve called it in the past. To be honest, when I was a teen, I thought it was OK. Hated it in my 20’s. Now I think that while it’s lesser Lynch, it has its moments, and I actually would rather sit through it than sit through Wild at Heart, Inland Empire or TP: The Return.

(I’m not a Frank Herbert fan and I could never finish the book, but the fact that he liked this movie should count for something!)
