Realized I never logged my favorite film of all time. Here’s what I wrote about it 2017:

The questions asked of us by Olivier Assayas in his second collaboration with Kristen Stewart swirl around the film like one of its spirits, haunting you and pulling at you. And like a spirit, the answers are often times easy to miss and if you do find them, they're inevitably hard to grapple with. Assayas weaves a brilliantly intricate tale of love, loss,…

Adored this. My favorite kind of messily indulgent and vulnerable filmmaking. It’s so audaciously open, wrestling with the dissolution of a marriage while embracing and dissecting every shitty conjecture made about her by the press. No wonder it was panned.

    “I noticed the hole.”

The hole in the wall acting as portal to the marriage’s past joys, failed hopes & everything in between is brilliant. Jolie turns our voyeurism of her & her marriage into a cathartic bit of foreplay, slowly bringing…

I’m such an easy lay for Pablo Larraín’s sad famous women movies where every thing is big, beautiful and boring. Liked this quite a bit. It’s kind of a mess but Angelina Jolie is incredible, feels like the kind of role that finally meets how much of a giant she is just as like, a public figure. Ed Lachman, the God, shooting the hell out of it too. The blues and greens made me wanna shout. Kept waiting for Larraín…

Keira Knightley is giving a truly insane performance here and if everyone and everything else were giving even 25% of what she’s is, this movie might be a strange, ill-advised all-timer.
A very bad movie with a performance I’ll be thinking about for the rest of my life.

    Costumes are incredible too.

After I saw The Iron Claw, I watched an interview with Kevin Von Erich and something he said really fucked me up; “they ask me about grief as if I’m an expert and I wish there was something I could tell them because the truth is so ugly that I don’t wanna say it. It doesn’t get better, it gets worse. *You* get used to it.”

That was on my mind through the entirety of this. We lose so…

I can’t believe I’m saying this but at least the Flash attempted something meaningful with Barry and his mom. This is just a victory lap for Disney buying Fox. It’s corporate cheerleading. I don’t understand why people don’t think they deserve better. Out of all the Multiverse movies that exist to show off a studio’s action figures, this is the one that truly has no movie around it. No real emotional arc, nothing to hold onto. It’s Point and…
