Connor Carey’s review published on Letterboxd:
Mike Flanagan has showed a lot of talent and promise in the horror genre with his first three features, but sadly not much of it was used in "Before I Wake". It's not a bad film at all, it's just so mediocre. The three lead performances are all quite solid. The film has a few creepy scenes and images, and there's actually some surprisingly touching moments sprinkled in. But where this movie is held back is in its story. It's actually kind of original but it gets repetitive after a while and makes very little sense in the end. The film also lacks in scares, their was never a moment where I was truly all that afraid, and unlike Flanagan's other films, some obnoxious jump scares are present here. This isn't a terrible movie at all, it has things to like but just as much to dislike. It's a middle of the road horror film and a minor speed bump in what is hopefully, a great directors career.
