The Last Showgirl

The Last Showgirl

The Last Showgirl finally gives Pamela Anderson a dramatic role worthy of her talents and she absolutely commands the screen at every turn. She gives such a soulful and human performance that she clearly channeled a lot of her own inner pain and struggles in, and if nothing else I hope this opens the door for a lot more opportunities in Hollywood for her because she deserves it. She's backed up by a talented supporting cast consisting of Billie Lourd, Kiernan Shipka, Brenda Song, Jamie Lee Curtis, and a very heartfelt & nuanced Dave Bautista. It's an entertaining character study exploring ageism in Vegas, but the overall film left me a little cold and never hit the same heights as Anderson's performance. This script just doesn't dive deep enough into its themes or characters, and a lot of things feel underdeveloped or underexplored by the time the credits begin to role. I like Gia Coppola as a filmmaker, but her films typically keep me at arms distance, and this is sadly no different. It's worth checking out for Pamela Anderson's brilliant lead performance that hopefully puts her back on the map, but I wanted a little more out of the overall film and it’s already fading from my memory despite seeing it less than a day ago.
