Dressed to Kill

Dressed to Kill

This is an interesting movie from Brian De Palma, where he presents us with themes of transsexualism and gender, while giving us a predictable murder mystery.
The story is good, but it took me some time to get into it, since the opening was so long and dragged a lot too, which it also could do a little later on. When the murder mystery finally gets going it is interesting, but it is very easy to guess who the killer is.
The movie appears to be inspired by “Psycho”, since the story has some similarities, where there are made some interesting changes. It has a lot of style, which is commonly said to be inspired by Hitchcock, but to me it feels more inspired by the Italian giallo movies, though they of course were heavily influenced by Hitchcock too.
The movie is full of great shots and has many well directed sequences full of suspense, but the overall experience still left me a little underwhelmed and wanting more.
The cast all did a great job and I thought we got some strong female performances, who were well supported by the males too. I just found the amount of nudity a little extreme and was surprised to see some full frontal so early on, but I can’t complain about naked women I guess.
I was also shocked to learn that this movie was nominated for three Razzie Awards, since I liked Nancy Allen so much, thought Brian De Palma did some excellent directing and thought Michael Caine was good too, but luckily none of them won the award at least.
