Is Mike Flanagan a child of divorce? Cause some really fucked up shit happens to parents in his movies.

I was sure the dad had something to do with the weird shit that was happening because I don't trust grown ass men with long hair unless it's Jason Momoa. I always trust Jacob Tremblay so I knew the evil child trope won't strike here. Must be the hippie dad, I thought.

And Mike please stop making me feel like I…

Like OCULUS does a really good job using patient editing, simple structural tricks, and internal narrative logic to make some pretty rote horror imagery seem fresh, but man, the sappy, expository wrap-up really sinks this.

This isn't really a horror movie. This is a dark, magical realist fable in the skin of a horror movie. Taken on those terms it works fantastically well.

Mike Flanagan once again demonstrates masterful control over tone and pacing. He is among the best working in the field of horror right now.

Before I Wake is an original story written by Flanagan and his frequent cohort Jeff Howard. It's about a little boy named Cody with a gift that allows…

    👻 Supernatural Horror 🎬 Mike Flanagan 💎 Gem #125 (2016) 🎼

"I don't like to sleep." "I know. But there's nothing to be scared of here." "Yes there is." "What?" "The canker man. [....] He's always with me. He says so."

Before I Wake is a film for people who need to grieve their childhood losses but who would rather be scared. And it’s beautiful.

If this were playing when I entered a room and I’d never seen it before,…

up until the last 7 minutes of this movie I thought the villain was called the Kinkerman and I'm still having a conniption about that

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

there's a part where Jacob Tremblay goes "i love this room!" and i thought no shut up you were just in a Room (2015)

THIS WAS GOING TO BE FOUR STARS BUT THE ENTIRE MOVIE IS AN ALLEGORY SO BYE MIKE FLANAGAN

(it really is a shame this movie has been delayed over five times, and it still hasn't been released yet)

The thing about this movie is that the story is actually really good, and pretty damn sad. What's also sad is that the experience is ruined by poor CGI and a bunch of cheap jump scares. Still, I'm giving this a positive rating because between the story and Kate Bosworth's heartfelt performance Before I Wake can be worth seeing once for horror fans.

Mike Flanagan has showed a lot of talent and promise in the horror genre with his first three features, but sadly not much of it was used in "Before I Wake". It's not a bad film at all, it's just so mediocre. The three lead performances are all quite solid. The film has a few creepy scenes and images, and there's actually some surprisingly touching moments sprinkled in. But where this movie is held back is in its story. It's…

just watched it, really good, it would be boring to some if you like those stupid loud noises and jumpscares with bloody gore etc. it's really good and original, sad yet happy at the same time.

Time to bust out the Mike Flanagan bingo card™ for this one:

    - an interesting premise ✔️
    - a creepy first half ✔️
    - cheap early jump scares ✔️
    - horrible shit hiding at the side of frame ✔️
    - a fantastic performance from the lead which carries everything ❌
    - underwhelming child actor(s) ✔️
    - continued reliance on jump scares ✔️
    - a tightly edited story that doesn't feel like it goes on forever ❌
    - brilliant villain(s) who are terrifying and well written ❌
    - everyone whispering all the god damn time ✔️

Those were literally the worst CGI butterflies.

Kate Bosworth has Jennifer Garner lips, but a botox forehead.

This was a rip-off of Nightmare on Elm Street with a few things that played out differently. I'm sorry, but what was the point?

I was going to complain about the monster too, but the end sort of wrapped it up nicely.
