Moore's masterwork, for me; I was sickened until I was crying until I had chills, all over my body, until I was scared witless.
Not that I wasn't already disgusted and dejected and terrified by the notions that Michael presents & explores herein, but he constructs them in such an expert, epiphanic fashion.
One can't help but feel an abrupt, and innately human need to continue to work harder than even before.
It's the kind of cinema with the capacity to advance one's acute awareness (of the ever-growing complexities) of what we refer to as reality & truth.
Huh. I mean as with all Moore you have to accept a certain amount of condescension and oversimplification and honestly the overt Trump stuff here hardly registers in the early sequences but when he turns the camera towards specific grassroots movements surrounding the Flint water crisis, West Virginia teacher's strike and local elections he begins to paint a genuinely effective picture of the class-based weariness that undemocratic, capitalist institutions (very much including the DNC, that Obama water clip...) create and benefit from. Consider me genuinely surprised at how little of this was the ~wild, crazy Trump movie~ promised and how much of it was a pretty straightforward and damning critique of all the historical precedent for his views, policies and tactics. Pouring one out right now for all the #Resistance-adjacent folks that are gonna turn this on expecting the former and have heart attacks every time this highlights the failures and corruptions of the Democrats that got us here.
Honestly? Good for him for using a Drumpf documentary as a Trojan horse for getting liberals to pay attention to the Flint Water Crisis.
"I am the storm." -Donald J. Trump
I'll open with a critique and it's a very important one: this film lacks focus. On the other hand, Michael Moore tries to address every single problem in America...so of course, it's two hours long. Known for his antics, Michael Moore delivers. It's like he's trying to keep us entertained or something. I laugh, I cried. I went home hoping that I would wake up the next morning and this political nightmare would just be a dream and Americans would actually have universal healthcare, racial justice, clean air, clean water, and livable wages. I did wake up 9/29, but none of those things are a reality.
Every time the 45th President does something…
TIFF 2018 film #2
Going into a Michael Moore film you can expect that you’re going to get an ‘entertainment’, rather than a traditional documentary. I can’t decide if this is Moore's most personal or most honest and accurate film yet. I think maybe both.
Expectation would be that it would be a 90 minute skewering of Trump. While there were several well landed jabs, particularly regarding his ‘fondness’ for his daughter, surprisingly most of the runtime is spent attacking all political stripes, particularly the DNC, Obama, and the Clintons.
I think this is a brilliant strategy. There is no way anyone on the right can attack this film as biased. Moore concentrates on the everyman, and how politicians from…

My 11-year old daughter asked if there are any Trump scares in this movie, referring to jump scares, and I just want to credit her for a pretty good joke for an 11-year old.
Obviously Michael Moore is a controversial figure. He is very intelligent (if you disagree you are wrong) but occasionally has a tendency to blur the lines between fact and theory. He is brave in the face of dissenting opinion and generates fear in the heart of his opponents (if you disagree with that you are also wrong). His mistakes are often used as proof of the problematic left and…
“911, what’s your emergency?”
“We have a large group of protesters, we’re going to need back-up.”
“Okay. Do you see any weapons?”

Michael is angry and he wants you to be angry too.
How the fuck did we get here?
-Michael Moore
I thought it was going to be 2 hours of a Donald Trump expose which honestly is no longer entertaining, but depressing. Learning more about Donald Trump is NEVER going to turn out good. It's no like you're going to suddenly realize that by God yes.. he IS a stable genius! Nope! The more you learn about that giant Cheetoh, the more you realize he's even a worst human being than you could possibly imagine.
Thankfully this isn't 2 hours of Trump, unfortunately though it might be even more depressing as Michael Moore showcases that the last place people should look for help when it comes to their best interests is…
Michael Moore is a talented documentarian whose films I’ve thoroughly enjoyed. I love his style because if anything he at least makes it entertaining. At this point, he’s got this whole documentary thing down.
This film does feel long, but not unnecessarily so.
