  In Georges Lautner's Galia, Newly arrived in Paris, Galia lives in a small apartment near Notre-Dame Cathedral. One evening, while strolling along the banks of the Seine, she saves a young woman from drowning. The young woman, Nicole, tells Galia that she had intended to drown herself, having left a suicide note for her husband, Greg. They embark on a plan to make him pay. It's about love, deception, manipulation of the discourse on both sides of a couple, and planning v the strength of feelings.

  This modish and occasionally arty melo is one of a dozen plus collaborations between director Georges Lautner and blonde beauty Mireille Darc who is best remembered to English speaking North American moviegoers as the star of JLG’s Weekend and for wearing the unforgettable backless black velvet butt crack revealing Guy Laroche designed dress in 1972’s The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe (remade in the US as the 1985 early Tom Hanks vehicle The Man with One Red Shoe, with Lori Singer wearing a William Ware Theiss black dress as homage to Darc/Laroche).   "Georges Lautner's "Galia" opens and closes with arty shots of the ocean, mother of us all, but in between it's pretty clear that what is washing ashore is the French New Wave.

  Ever since the memorable "Breathless" (1960) and "Jules and Jim," and the less memorable "La Verite," we have been treated to a parade of young French girls running gaily toward the camera in slow motion, their hair waving in the wind in just such a way that we know immediately they are liberated, carefree, jolly and doomed.

  Poor Galia is another. Played by the passingly attractive Mireille Darc, she comes to Paris from the provinces, becomes a window dresser, joins a Bohemian crowd and lives, naturally, in a…

  Il aura fallu attendre 2025 pour que je puisse découvrir ce que je considère désormais comme le meilleur film de la carrière de Mireille Darc.

  Superbe si ce n'est sublime photo n&b de Maurice Fellous, quelques fulgurances visuelles (la façon dont sont filmés les visages, séquence psychédélique du rêve, les jeux de lumière...) une voix off ironique habilement utilisée contrastant avec le comportement insouciant de la protagoniste et qui crée un décalage subjuguant et malaisant, mise en scène troublante jouant sur le cloisonnement, le double..., musique de Magne romantique et cynique, et plus globalement un drame implacable et angoissant traitant tout simplement... de solitude.

  This black and white movie from 1966 lives and breathes through its main actress Mireille Darc, one of France's brightest stars in the 1960's and 1970's. She is playing Galia a carefree twenty something girl living in Paris. One night she saves a woman who jumped into the Seine because of her failing marriage and meandering husband. Galia takes her into her own apartment and convinces her to stay a few days while she is chacking out the adulterous husband. Of course when she meets the guy, she falls in love with him.
