Still the best (probably the only good) piece of narrative fiction made about the invasion and occupation of Iraq. Nothing else comes close in accurately depicting the true level of incompetence, evil, and general fucked-ness of that war, or the strange community and macabre humour that develops in such a weird circumstance
It's also the only depiction of modern western military culture that is honest and authentic, in everything from the Marines' language to their politics and ideologies. Movies like the hurt locker or American sniper with all their bullshit jingoism and machismo, and their sentimentality for the soldiers, never really admit that these people are victims of exploitation, mostly financial, or that the ones who aren't are often complete…
