In the summer of 1863, General Robert E. Lee leads the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia into Gettysburg, Pennsylvania with the goal of marching through to Washington, D.C. The Union Army of the Potomac, under the command of General George G. The ultimate dad movie.
The Heaven's Gate of war movies, though whilst Michael Cimino's western can be accused of self-indulgence and hubristic intent, it's much more difficult to say the same about Ronald F. Maxwell's Civil War epic, a film so sincere, authentic and historically accurate that it seems almost unfair to criticise its ambition.
Originally conceived as a miniseries for cable network TNT, Gettysburg never really overcomes its made-for-TV origins in terms of visuals and cinematic ingenuity, but it is frequently very beautiful and the enormous battle sequences are epic on a scale not seen since the days of D.W. With all due respect to Gone With the Wind and several other films, Gettysburg is just in a class to itself among Civil War movies in my opinion. It’s nearly impossible for me to carve out the time to watch the 4 1/2 hour movie all at once now but my enjoyment of the film has never taken a hit.
You get all the action you’d want/expect from a war movie and also details of the war strategies (which I love) are covered very well. Using the long runtime to its advantage Gettysburg also details a lot of the characters lives outside of the battlefield. And the movie treats the men on both sides of the war with great respect.…

Ronald F Maxwell's director's cut of Gettysburg is 271 minutes long, and even for a film on a subject that's fascinated me since my childhood obsession with history, that's still a long ass film. It's worth it though, and it may have taken me two days to get through it, but somehow the passion of Maxwell's historical epic comes through in what he brought to the screen. I'd read somewhere that this film was described as "bloated Southern propaganda", a somewhat unfair accusation, at least for me, but I could understand some of the rhetoric not sitting well with certain American audiences who perhaps thought the acclaim and love shown towards Martin Sheen's General Robert E. Lee was insensitive.

Epic Civil War drama about The Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, any over four-hour film often screams self-indulgence but Gettysburg, released twenty-five years ago, uses finely-tuned detail and some committed performances to be the best Hollywood adaption of the bloodiest battle in American history.
To learn about Gettysburg, other battles, and pretty much anything about the Civil War, you'd do well to turn to Ken Burns' PBS masterpiece of the same name. It really is the greatest piece of American historical documentary probably ever made.

The premier historical war epic for the American Civil War. The history here is gripping and fascinating. The action in the film is suspenseful and intense. Sure, it's easy by today's standards to condemn a film for simply portraying the confederacy as one has done in my review of the prequel, Gods and Generals, but to me that's akin to condemning movies like Inglorious Bastards for simply portraying Nazis. In the UK we are not that au fait with the events of Gettysburg or other battles as we don't study them at school. I love war films and I hate war films. I love the heroics, men rising to a challenge, and extreme situations, but man, I really hate the needless deaths. The US Civil War, in particular, was horrific in the number of deaths, and the fact that friends and family fought each other. Gettysburg was the turning point of the war, and it came at a horrible cost.
This movie is superbly made and even someone unfamiliar with the battle should be able to follow what is going on. There is some speechifying on both sides, and the acting is wonderful. And the music is one of the best soundtracks I've heard.
