Because it uses the same sets and was produced around the same time, I like to think that this takes place in the same universe as Monty Python's LIFE OF BRIAN.
It's a tradition for Chileans that every Easter Weekend we watch Jesus of Nazareth because it's been shown on national tv for 36 years.
After the 60s barely buried the Biblical epic under the pavement of the hard flop left by George Stevens' The Greatest Story Ever Told and John Huston’s The Bible that failed to drawn many audiences despite their delivered spectacle. So as is today as it was back then, TV was the way to go to work in unlimited freedom, as long as the budget could keep it running.
It probably sealed the fate of every Jesus film/depiction/adaptation that came afterwards being secluded to TV format/budget for years until Mel Gibson brought to life the definitive depiction of the Calvary… and then it got back to TV / sappy self-help Christian flicks and some mid-dramas with big names attached like Joaquin…
TheMovinator’s Countdown to Christmas 🎄
This is a great miniseries that was well made and accurately portrayed Jesus Christ and other people in The Bible like Mary, Joseph, John The Baptist and more. I really love seeing a good portrayal on screen.
This was probably my first TV memory, shown over Easter weekend in 1977. Robert Powell plays Jesus in a career-defining role which put him alongside a star-studded international cast in the story of Christ. This adaptation was so beloved it even got the seal of approval from Rome.
Watching it again now, it is still very good indeed, with excellent production values and direction from Franco Zefferelli. It may speak mainly to people of faith, but can also be enjoyed as a period drama, lovingly put together.
Just some of the people involved in it: Anne Bancroft is Mary Magdalene, Olivia Hussey is Mary, Michael York is John the Baptist, Ian McShane is Judas, Christopher Plummer is Herod, Rod Steiger…
Our catholic school teacher told us it was alright to cry when the dude gets crucified.
Three. Hundred. Eighty. Two. Minutes. This is what I sat through in order to witness 2 minutes of Ernest Borgnine screentime, who stars as the Christ and savior of all mankind. Honestly, do I need to tell you what happens in this thing? Just read the Bible, it will take less time. I think the intention here was to keep people indoors long enough to watch it so they won’t go out and sin. This version features a pretty smoking hot Virgin Mary and a creepy unblinking husky-eyed Aryan Jesus along with cameos by Bilbo Baggins, Darth Vader, Mrs. Robinson, and that guy from Deadwood.
Regardé sur la télé du Frite Alors avec du Stromae en background car y’a pas eu un criff de client d’la journée
