No offense but the high budget, star studded, practically unachievable Mrs. Dalloway movie I made up in my head starring Daisy Edgar Jones, Anya Taylor Joy, Fionn Whitehead, George McKay, and every old ass British actor in cinema is so much better than this. It also includes a collection of unhinged party photos at the end like in The Hangover movies because it’s what Virginia Woolf would have wanted!
I think it's impossible to adapt Woolf for the screen, unless a more experimental approach is taken (like Sally Potter's Orlando).
Marleen Gorris makes a perfectly respectable attempt though. There's interesting work done with memory and how film can communicate it. There's some breathtaking moments (mainly between Clarissa and Sally, though not exclusively) and Vanessa Redgrave is an excellent Clarissa, as is Natascha McElhone.

It's interesting that Mrs. Dalloway was required reading back in high school, if only because, nearly half of its desired meaning is from a very post-war British perspective, but that does not stop Woolf from implementing many poetic ideas in tandem with Billy Shakes' own verbiage from Cymbaline. There is also the main through-line of time and death, symbolized by trees, flowers, and water.

I know very little of Virginia Woolf, to the point of confusing the plots of Mrs. Dalloway and To The Lighthouse, and that's not good for University Challenge. So, to correct this, I plumped for one of the few adaptations of Woolf that exist, alongside the Sally Potter Orlando, but being bloody-minded, I thought I would go for the one people forget. Eileen Atkins's script does overuse voiceover, but her love for the author (she frequently appeared in works based on her writing) shines through, being a largely faithful adaptation of the narrative itself. On December 17th, 2011, I saw the final performance of Driving Miss Daisy starring Vanessa Redgrave, James Earl Jones and Boyd Gaines in the Wyndhams Theatre in London. A couple of British friends took me - my mother died two months earlier and I was in need of something cheerful, or at least something beautiful. I have a lot of mixed feelings towards this film, but I guess if I were to summarise, I feel that the ball was dropped somewhere halfway through the film and it begins to meander a bit aimlessly towards its finish. The casting was great, and above all I really enjoyed Rupert Graves' portrayal of Septimus -- I actually kind of lost interest after his role finished in the film.
I feel like there was an uncertainty on how to handle Woolf's source material which lead to a weakness in the film's script and writing. As previously stated, the cast was great -- the plot (condensed into one day and told non-linearly) is solid, even the set designs were lovely. But in the long run, the film just falls flat at its finish.
Still very decent though, not bad -- just lackluster.

There is a lot of strength in the script,so I suppose it comes from the novel. It needed more runtime I guess.
There's an aura of melancholy and, to some extent, regret that permeates Mrs. Dalloway, a film in which we examine a day in the life of a woman who keeps reminiscing about her past, an old love and a lost friendship while prepares to host a party. It's a story about life choices, about daring to be adventurous or choosing a more simple path and, most importantly, about coming to terms with our decisions and try to be as happy as we can.
