The Babadook is not a horror film... not to me, at least. It's a dark, brooding psychological drama that utilizes tropes of the horror genre to convey an underlying message. It's a film about two things: grief and drug addiction. This is quite clear to me. "You can't get rid of The Babadook." Certainly, you can't; you can't get rid of your addictions, and you can't get rid of the feeling of missing your deceased loved ones... you can only tame yourself to live without harmful, escapist tendencies. Had the incredible pleasure of re-watching this with Jennifer Kent today at Fantastic Fest for a special live episode of my DIRECTOR'S COMMENTARY podcast.
The theater was sold out. We talked for a few minutes about her journey to becoming a filmmaker, and then sat together with the audience to discuss the film in real time as it played. Hearing her thoughts, recollections, and insights about the film was absolutely amazing. She hadn't seen it in almost ten years, and I think everyone in the theater got emotional in the film's final moments. What a surreal and wonderful way to experience this seminal piece of work.
