The spider-horse scene has haunted my nightmares since I was 10 and I’m genuinely afraid to revisit this film because of it.

Always liked the premise here of illusionists/con artists being forced to confront real fairy tale movie magic, and there's some decent production design and FX work (some occasionally janky CG notwithstanding) but it never really tops the self-reflexive opening performance they put on and quickly stops being about that angle and pivots to being a more traditional, sluggishly paced supernatural adventure mystery. Even baby Josh was falling asleep during this one when it came out, Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow the better version of what this thinks it's doing.

Terry Gilliam’s ninth film is a fun dark fantasy adventure romp, following two 19th Century conmen (played by Matt Damon and Heath Ledger) who stumble onto an ancient curse. Having this story revolve around fairytales is ideal for the filmmaker’s imagination to go off in all sorts of fresh directions: there’s a lot of moving parts here, which aren’t always completely seamless in fitting together, but Gilliam’s frenetic (and very idiosyncratic) style propels it all along.

I enjoyed the grungy production design, and there's certainly something to be admired in how genuinely weird it gets at times, but when that's the strongest selling point in a Terry Gilliam movie, a director lauded for always being genuinely weird, that's when it's time to admit there's not a whole lot going on.
