I rented this because I read there was a trans character and the story looked potentially interesting, but like...this is an actual movie with heart and personality, WOW. It feels very YA in certain ways, but they happen to be ways I really liked when I was a teen and still have a soft spot for now. Amazed to find out this wasn't based on a book, in the best way possible. And finding out that the screenwriter is trans too?? Someone like me wrote a movie this good? Whew. Today is a good day.
I can personally attest to the reality of those who actually love a missing person being better than the cops at finding them. I am not saying not to call the cops if your loved one goes missing, but I am saying that their job is not to serve you. They aren't really good at helping people; often times, they will cause more harm than good. Do whatever it is you need to do to find them, but know if you call the cops, they may prove either a hindrance to finding them, useless in finding them, or actively trying to kill or arrest your loved one. But if you need their resources, you need their resources. Life's complicated.

this was the most unexpected trans representation i've seen in a movie but also surprisingly well done
"God bless all the stupid children" - best line of the film!
An adorable premisse with adorable actors, this film has some great moments, mainly during its last act! The pair of protagonist is great and their stories are beautiful and touching. And all of that is maximized be amazing music! At the same time, the flow of the film felt so unequal and abrupt at times! The "freak show" arc appeared out of thin air and felt too rushed. Besides, that's so overused! Too bad they dragged this arc almost throughout the whole movie. Another problem: the jumps that finished scenes with no real conclusion and characters that vanished suddenly also annoyed me! But it was a worthy experience nonetheless.
chris messina and chloe sevigny playing a divorced couple AGAIN??
This has plenty o’ issues but imma give this 5/5 simply because I could watch a trans girl hitting her bigot mom in the head with a two by four all damn day.
Like a fairy tale YA I would have read and cherished as a kid. Would have been my favorite goddamn movie as a kid. John Turturro is a gift of a human. TRANS SCREENWRITER. TRANS ACTRESS PLAYING A TRANS CHARACTER. Cute and off kilter and odd and lovely. A little hiccupy and doesn’t quite stick the landing buuuuuuuuuut see above. I want twenty more movies like this please and thank.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Centred around a terrific performance from young Jaeden Martell (It, Arcadian, Knives Out, St. Vincent) The True Adventures of Wolfboy follows a young, teen boy named Paul who was born covered in fur and how he deals with this while trying to avoid bullies and rebuffing the good, but sometimes unwelcomed, intentions of his loving father (an excellent Chris Messina).
Paul longs to meet his mother who, he believes, harbours the secret to his happines, so he sets out on his own, tries to make some quick cash at a carnival where he meets the ringmaster Mr Silk (a slightly over-the-top John Turturro). After running from this situation Paul hooks…
I picked this movie based on the title alone. I’m exploring movies that use wolf and werewolf themes and the name Wolfboy suggested a link to the iconic 1941 horror feature The Wolf Man.
Turns out, this is something quite different. It is the story of a 13-year-old boy named Paul (Jaeden Martell) who has a rare medical condition that causes excessive hair growth on his face and body. He regularly suffers abuse related to his appearance, including being likened to a dog or wolf.
The title either insults the main character or it is meant in some ironic sense I didn’t quite get.
That’s how the whole movie feels–hard to get. Literally: I couldn’t hear a lot of the…
This film felt like a fairy tale with a modern twist. It's a breath of fresh air with it's approach and I liked the music and loved the gorgeous illustrations used for the different story chapters, but I did feel like there was something missing that I couldn't seem to point my finger on.
“I don’t want to meet others like me.”
-“Why?”
“Because I hate me”
Screened @ 2019 Buffalo Film Fest
This was actually really good. It had a strong message all the way through. I have to commend the writer and especially the EDITOR for fitting a full, interesting story into 88 minutes and not making it feel rushed when it seems like everything else these days is needlessly stretched out to 2.5 hours
Right when you get to the point of hating yourself and thinking about how you need to stop smoking weed, John Turturro shows up and (almost) makes deciding to watch this movie pay off. He’s my wolfboy.
