  If I had to choose between watching Rooney Mara eating a pie with no expression on her face for five to ten minutes or Alfre Woodard eating a pie melodramatically for like a minute and 30 seconds, I’m gonna pick the latter every time.

  umm how is this not a thanksgiving/holiday classic?? like, seriously the diverse representations, the realisticness, the humanity and humor, the chemistry and performances, etc. etc! it’s just such an interesting, fun, lively, and ultimately entertaining/feel-good film—and well-made overall too, of course! 

  it kinda reminded me of the family stone, which i love! so sure, maybe it’s just my taste for dysfunctional/awkward family dramedies, especially if they’re like a reunion/over a holiday and have some nice representation, but like c’mon, the humanness and fearlessness of films like these is refreshing and kinda like comforting to see! 

  the only major drawback of this one is that the vietnamese family, the nguyens, is kinda inaccurately cast, being played by actors of various asian descents. but other than that, i’d totally rec what’s cooking?, particularly if you’re also like me and love a good family dramedy!
