2025 Releases Ranked
With Prescence, Soderbergh somehow blends the worst parts of Paranormal Activity with the most exciting parts of M. Night Shyamalan’s early work to create something that’s both familiar and experimental in equal measures. The POV cinematography does a lot of the heavy lifting in what’s an otherwise fairly simple narrative, but it’s clearly used for a purpose and quickly establishes itself as more than a cheap gimmick. A little too much clunky dialogue and I’m not totally convinced it sticks the landing, but it’s certainly never boring and that’s more than can be said for most entries in the genre it’s riffing on.

Black Bag 2025
With its sharp screenplay, slick performances, and high-speed editing, Black Bag is the most electric movie of the year so far. This whole thing feels like a challenge for Soderbergh to fit as much compelling drama and character work into a ninety minute timespan as possible, and it’s a resounding success. Plotted with flawless intricacy, this is a story that invites the audience to lose themselves in a web of conspiracy and secrecy, using matters of national security as a backdrop to an almost Agatha Christie-esque mystery. Endlessly watchable, and surprisingly unpredictable given how much foreshadowing there is.

I don’t wanna say this was a bad script...but they said the name of the movie 5 times in the first 30 minutes.
