Come and See 1985
perhaps the most distressing film i've ever had the (mis?)fortune to see. listen, i'm not going to mince words or wax poetic about come and see. i enjoy a disturbing film like any normal person. however, the realism in this one puts it at a different level than anything else i've ever seen. i had feared this film, in all honesty, due to its reputation as one of the most disturbing films ever made. in my opinion, it deserves that…

You Killed Me First 1985
a portrait of teenage and female rage distilled down into 11 minutes. lung leg is scary as hell in this, and yet you feel for cassandra. you can understand what leads to her boiling over; why she snaps. her rage is palpable and realistic. kern is so great at focusing her anger. transgressive cinema is dirty and gritty and oh, so great. it's very fun to see these things put on camera. all i know is that if i saw this in high school, i would have been more insufferable than i already was!

But the Flesh Is Weak 1932
finally, the first movie where men are portrayed as gold diggers and not women... that's true equality. i just wish i liked the movie much more than i did the plot concept. the only character i really related to was the dude who said "i hate talking to men." like literally mecore...
anyway. still love pre-codes even if this was an unfortunate miss :/

Blue Velvet 1986
love is the answer. i feel like that's a running theme in lynch's films. yes, the world is awful and there's a terrible darkside, but love can break through the dark. love is there. love will be there as long as humans can love. it's a positive thing, really, and it's a nice thing to think about as well. love, love, love.
just keep loving. that's all you can do on this bitch of an earth.

V/H/S/Beyond 2024
call this slop all you want, but the v/h/s series is a guilty pleasure for me! honestly, this is a truly solid entry into the franchise— i feel as if each segment is strong and realized. my favorite is either "fur babies" or "live and let die" but honestly, you could make a case for any of these being good. these films really are a grab bag of shorts, but behind 94, i feel as if these are the most cohesive overall.
whatever, i don't have to justify liking these. they're a great way to kill two hours and i love sci-fi horror a lot.
