When Wilhelmina Henry retired four years ago she knew that she needed something to help her stay busy and active. “I had heard that a lot of people who retire are unhappy because they lack structure,” she said. So Wilhelmina decided to join the West Philadelphia Senior Community Center (WPSC), where she enjoys numerous activities, especially line dancing classes.
“If it wasn’t for the Center I would probably stay at home in bed and watch TV. It gives me the initiative to get up and do something,” Wilhelmina said. “Even if you don’t have to do anything, you should. It’s important to stay active. Line dancing classes give me direction in planning my weekly routine, and give me discipline.”
Wilhelmina also enjoys dances and parties at the center, helping with the Christmas bazaar, and has recently joined the WPSCC Red Hat Society. “I’ve met a lot of really nice people and have made many friends,” she said. “It’s amazing to me; I go places and see people that I’ve met here that I wouldn’t know otherwise. Meeting new people and interacting with others really adds value to your life. There’s a friendly and welcoming atmosphere here. I really enjoy it and am glad that I joined.”
