This refreshing fruit salad made with granny smith apples, oranges, and grapefruit with honey and mint is an easy, refreshing side dish or snack!

The term 'fruit salad' always brings to mind the smushy little fruit cocktail cups that I had as a young child in my grade school cafeteria, or a sad mixture of all the forgotten about lone fruits that end up getting soggy and brown. Not exactly appealing. But fruit salad can be grown up and sophisticated! I'll show you.

Why You'll Love This Apple Citrus Salad

In this salad, bright citrus and granny smith apples cut the sweetness of traditional fruit salads with a pop of sour, sweet and fresh! Mint leaves add a nice floral note, while a drizzle of honey gives a nice bitterness for a deeper sweet flavor that plays off the sour notes in the granny smith apple and grapefruit. Properly segmenting the citrus ensures that you only enjoy the sweet, juicy fruit and no icky white membrane. It's so fresh and delicious, with no syrup or maraschino cherries in sight. It's easy to make and perfect for brightening up cookouts and potlucks.

How To Make Granny Smith Apple Citrus Salad

  1. Segment the grapefruit and oranges. If you don't know how, here's a tutorial. It's a skill that everyone should have.
  2. Core and thinly slice the apple and thinly slice the mint.
  3. Toss everything together and drizzle with honey.

Can This Salad Be Made In Advance?

Yes! Apples typically brown within minutes of being sliced, but the high acidity in the citrus fruit preserves the slice granny smith apples so that this salad can be made a few hours before enjoying. Store the prepared salad in an airtight container in the refrigerator before serving.

  • Yield: 4-6 servings 1x
  • Category: side dish
  • Method: no cook
  • Cuisine: American

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large ruby red grapefruit
  • 1 granny smith apple
  • 2 small oranges (navel, blood orange, cara cara, or a combination)
  • 6-10 large fresh mint leaves
  • Honey (optional)

Instructions

  1. Section grapefruit and oranges by cutting off top and bottom ends, then slicing the peel off vertically, working all the way around the fruit. Use your knife to separate the segments from the membranes. (Here is a more in depth tutorial for segmenting citrus.)
  2. Thinly slice granny smith apples into ¼ in slices.
  3. Cut mint leaves into thin ribbons.
  4. In a medium bowl, mix fruit and mint and gently stir to combine. Drizzle lightly with honey (optional).
  5. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve, up to a few hours in advance.

Notes

  • Omit honey for a refreshing, no added sugar option.
  • I used cara cara and navel oranges here, but use any variety of orange.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container up to 2 days.

Added mango & grapes. Will serve with sliced bananas & pecans on top. If desired, too with homemade whipped cream or yogurt with a maraschino cherry on top. A wonderful, nutritious dessert!

So simple and gorgeous! We love grapefruit in our house - even the girls do, which is shocking to me since i didn't touch it until I was an adult.
