STERLINGTON, La. – The 23rd-ranked Loyola Wolf Pack baseball team opened up the Cajun Collision with the defending NAIA National Champions on Friday, losing a hard-fought game to Southeastern (Fla.), 5-1. The Pack (6-3) will resume the tournament on Saturday with a matchup against Baker (Kan.) at 11 a.m.
Stephen Still got the start for the Wolf Pack and battled for six winning with six strikeouts. The junior scattered four hits while giving up just one earned run throughout his outing, as the Fire scored in the sixth inning to tie the game, 1-1. Still began his day with back-to-back strikeouts to start the game, then he really didn't face too much trouble until his final frame.
On the offensive side, the Pack had a hard time with the Southeastern starter and had three base runners through the first five innings. Finally, in the sixth, Cole Romero doubled with two outs and he scored two batters later off a Christopher Bohrer single to give Loyola the 1-0 lead. The Fire got that run back in the next half-inning off one hit and three walks, but the Pack's defense did throw out a runner at home to prevent any more damage.
However, the Fire put up four runs in the bottom of the eighth to create a little separation.
