Canalave City (Japanese: ミオシティ Mio City) is a city in the Sinnoh region. Canalave City is a port city that is bisected by a canal which is crossed by a small drawbridge. It has an air of exotic and foreign culture. In Platinum, its entrance is blocked until the player defeats Cyrus at Celestic Town. Large ships are moored at the piers. In the old days, the port used to be a hub of cargo transportation. The Move Deleter is in a house on the east side of town. The Canalave Library has many books on Sinnoh myths. The ferry in the canal will take people out to Iron Island and Fullmoon Island and sometimes Newmoon Island.

Geography
Canalave Library
- Main article: Canalave Library
The Canalave Library is found in the northwestern side of Canalave City. It is the only library in Sinnoh and it has shelves of books, containing the myths of Sinnoh. It is the place the player, the rival, Lucas/Dawn, and Professor Rowan meet up before the player goes to Lake Valor.
Move Deleter
- Main article: Move Deleter
The Move Deleter is located on the east side of the city, near the seaside. He is the only Move Deleter in the Sinnoh region. Although not a hugely important place to visit, the Move Deleter is helpful for deleting moves that can't be deleted otherwise.
He is a very forgetful man, and lives alone. For no charge, the Move Deleter will make a Pokémon forget a move it knows. This is the only way for a Pokémon to forget HM moves such as Cut or Fly. A Pokémon's move will not be forgotten if it is the only move it knows.
Sailor Eldritch's house
A local Sailor called Eldritch lives in a small house near the pier with his wife and young son. He works at the docks of Canalave City, which is just outside his house, and operates the boat that can take people to a variety of destinations, among them Iron Island and Fullmoon Island. After the player has both entered the Hall of Fame and obtained the National Pokédex, they find that Eldritch's son has been stricken by nightmares and cannot awaken, thrashing in his sleep, saying "Dar... Dark... Is watching me...". To cure the boy, the player must go to Fullmoon Island with Eldritch's help and retrieve a Lunar Feather, which will cure his son.
Harbor Inn
The mysterious Harbor Inn is located on the north-eastern side of Canalave City, and was a thriving inn until it mysteriously closed down for many years. Now the doors remain locked and no one can seem to open them. Before obtaining the Member Card, trying to enter the Harbor Inn only yields the phrase "The door is tightly shut. It appears impossible to open." The only way to unlock the inn is by obtaining a Member Card, an event-exclusive item. When inside, there is a man who puts the player into a deep sleep. Once they awake, they appear at Newmoon Island, where Darkrai can be battled. After the event, the door to the Harbor Inn is locked again.
Canalave Gym
- Main article: Canalave Gym
The Canalave Gym is the official Gym of Canalave City. It is based on Steel-type Pokémon. The Gym Leader is Byron. Trainers who defeat him receive the Mine Badge. The Canalave City Gym is a four-story tall building made of steel platforms, lifts, and moving metal platforms. Trainers must ride the elevators and moving platforms in a certain order to reach the fourth floor, on which Byron waits. For defeating Byron, Trainers receive the Mine Badge, TM91 (Flash Cannon), and the ability to use Strength outside of battle.

Pokémon the Series
In the animated series, Canalave City is located on a chain of islands connected by bridges. Ash, Dawn, Brock, and Barry first arrived there via blimp in Jumping Rocket Ship!, where the group, Team Rocket, and their Pokémon became scattered all over the city. The city is shown to be full of confusing alleyways with many dead-ends, as well as many bridges and canals to allow boats to travel. One of the city's landmarks is the Canalave Harbor, a large pier that allows people to travel to many places by boat, including Iron Island, Fullmoon Island, and Chocovine Town. A large bridge crosses the harbor which can open up to allow larger boats beneath it. On top, an underground sewer is also seen to lead to the harbor. The islands are also shown to contain many areas of forestland.
In Sleepless In Pre-Battle!, it is revealed that Darkrai visits the city once a year and that usually Cresselia drives it away. However, the Darkrai came earlier than usual due to Team Rocket's Nightmare Machine causing all the locals to have nightmares. As a result, even the busiest shopping districts became deserted.
In Get Your Rotom Running!, Ash and his friends visited the Old Chateau, where they befriended a Rotom, which had taken residence there after the château was closed down due to a recent thunderstorm. Ash and his friends continued to stay in the city in the next episode, where Ash trained for his upcoming Gym battle, and Dawn attempted to battle with her Piloswine for the first time.
In Ancient Family Matters!, Byron returned from Iron Island. However, Ash still could not have his battle as Byron was quarreling with his son Roark. Finally, in Dealing With Defensive Types!, Ash battled Byron and won, earning the Mine Badge, his sixth Sinnoh League Badge overall. In the next episode, a group of wild Wailord was preventing boats from leaving the Canalave Harbor. Ash helped to free a trapped Wailmer out of the underground sewer, allowing the Wailord to swim out. In Steeling Peace of Mind!, Ash and his friends left Canalave City for Iron Island after receiving an urgent phone call from Barry.
In The Gates of Warp!, Ash and Chloe visited the Canalave Library to do research on Palkia, meeting Cynthia there as well. Upon exiting the library, they were attacked by Alternate World Team Rocket, who attempted to steal their Pokémon. When the capture failed, the evil trio decided to withdraw, with Ash and Chloe following them to the alternate world before the gateway connecting the two worlds closed. On the other side, they found themselves in an alternate Canalave City, where they met Ash's alternate world counterpart. In Showdown at the Gates of Warp!, Ash, Dawn, Goh, and Chloe returned to their own world in Canalave City.
In The Arceus Chronicles (Part 1), Ash and Goh traveled to Canalave City to attend a festival dedicated to ancient Sinnoh, where they met Dawn and Cynthia. Cynthia told them about Sinnoh's history and the Pokémon that inhabited it in ancient times, even allowing them to experience catching Pokémon with old-style Poké Balls.

Pokémon Adventures
Canalave City first appeared in A Big Stink Over Stunky when Professor Rowan and Mr. Berlitz arrived there for an academic conference at the Canalave Library.
In Drifting Drifblim, Mr. Bertliz was approached by the Advanced level Grunt, who claimed that Team Galactic had kidnapped his daughter Platinum, using a photograph of her as evidence, and saying that her bodyguards, Paka and Uji, had been dealt with. For her release, the Grunt demanded $1.5 billion to be used for the construction of the Galactic Bomb, despite the fact that Team Galactic didn't actually have Platinum.
After hearing of Professor Rowan and Mr. Berlitz's disappearance in Brash Bronzong I, Platinum headed to Canalave City alongside Diamond and Pearl, receiving a ride there from Fantina's Drifblim. Soon after arriving, Platinum heard her father's voice and followed it to the Canalave Gym, where she was challenged by Byron, who considered her, Diamond, and Pearl as intruders for having barged into the Gym in the middle of the night. At first, Platinum didn't want to fight him, but after seeing her father and Professor Rowan being trapped in a transparent cube behind Byron, she assumed he was responsible for their disappearance and fought harder, quickly defeating Byron's two Bronzong.
After seeing Platinum's Gym Badges, Byron realized he had been wrong about her and explained that the Advanced level Grunt had trapped Mr. Berlitz and Professor Rowan inside the cube after getting the ransom money. As the cube had started to wear off over time, Platinum was able to talk with her father, who was confused when she referred to Diamond and Pearl as her bodyguards. Diamond and Pearl admitted that they were not actually her bodyguards, with her intended bodyguards having been sent to another world in Veilstone City. At first, Platinum was mad at them for having lied to her, but eventually, she came to realize that she too had lied to her friends on multiple occasions in the past, and apologized to them.
In Hurrah for Rapidash, following Platinum's apology and the cube wearing off completely, the Pokédex holders decided to split up in order to protect each of Sinnoh's three lakes and the lake guardians that rested within them from Team Galactic. While Pearl headed to Lake Valor and Platinum set off for Lake Acuity, Byron decided to send Diamond to train with Riley at Iron Island before he'd depart to Lake Verity. After finishing his training, Diamond returned to Canalave City aboard the S.S. Sinnoh in Vexing Vespiquen & Unmanageable Mothim II.
In The Final Dimensional Duel V, Palmer told Platinum how Sailor Eldritch living in Canalave City had once asked him for his help in curing his son's unending nightmare. Traveling to Fullmoon Island, Palmer had encountered Cresselia, and used a Lunar Wing dropped by it to cure Eldritch's son.

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure!
Canalave City first appeared in Challenge! The Fortress Of Steel!!, where Byron invited Hareta to train at his Gym after hearing of his loss against Cyrus. While Hareta managed to clear the Gym's obstacles easily enough, he was swiftly defeated by Byron, who told him to go train at Iron Island before their rematch. After returning from Iron Island in The Legendary Pokémon, Captured, Hareta learned of an explosion at Lake Valor. Suspecting Team Galactic, he immediately headed to the lake.
In Hareta's Excellent New Partner...Minun?!, Hareta and Mitsumi met Professor Rowan and Jun at the Canalave Library. Rowan told them that the International Police was pursuing both Team Galactic and Hareta's father, Kaisei, because of the latter's knowledge regarding Giratina and the fear of him teaming up with the former. Before the conversation could continue, the group was attacked by Saturn, who wanted to get revenge on Hareta for the defeats he had inflicted upon him in the past. With the help of his recently hatched Minun, Hareta was able to once again defeat Saturn, who told him that Kaisei was at the Team Galactic HQ in Veilstone City.
In the TCGTrivia
- The son of the sailor who owns the boat that normally goes to Iron Island says "Dar... Dark... Is watching me..." during his unending nightmare that begins the Cresselia event. He most likely means Darkrai.
- After the blast caused by Team Galactic's bomb, most of the NPCs in the city say something different than what they said previously.
- Canalave City is the first city to have a library in the Pokémon games.
- In Pokémon Platinum, if the player tries to enter Canalave City before visiting Celestic Town, they will be blocked by two men and a group of Pikachu and Clefairy.
- Before entering Canalave City from Route 218, there is a guard in the gate who, when talked to, says "Boy... Am I thirsty...". This is a reference to the thirsty guards surrounding Saffron City in the Generation I games.
- During Darkrai's event, the Harbor Inn's slogan temporarily says A Roost for Restless Sailors. "Enjoy sweet dreams in our sumptous beds!". After either defeating or catching Darkrai, the Inn's slogan reverts to its original unreadable phrase.
- Also, after exiting the Inn, Eldritch appears and asks the player why they have been sleeping for so long, stating that nobody has been residing the Inn for the last fifty years.
