Dig (Japanese: あなをほる Dig Hole) is a damage-dealing Ground-type move introduced in Generation I.

It is:

Effect

In battle

The user digs underground and becomes immune to almost all moves during the first turn, known as a semi-invulnerable turn. On the following turn, Dig will do damage, PP will be deducted from it, and it will count as the last move used.

Once Dig is selected, the user will not be able to switch out until the move is disrupted or fully executed. If Dig is not fully executed, PP will not be deducted from it, and it will not count as the last move used.

If the user is holding a Power Herb, this item is consumed and Dig is executed in one turn.

During the semi-invulnerable turn, the user is also immune against damage from sandstorm and hail.

Dig can be disrupted by full paralysis, infatuation, or self-inflicted damage due to confusion.

Some moves still work on a semi-invulnerable Pokémon:

A semi-invulnerable Pokémon can also be hit if it has No Guard, or if it is targeted by a Pokémon with No Guard, or if it is under the effect of Lock-On or Mind Reader.

If Mirror Move is used on a Pokémon that is currently on a semi-invulnerable turn, Mirror Move will copy the move that the user executed immediately before using Dig (or fail if it cannot).

Instruct fails when used on a Pokémon whose last move was Dig.

Generation I

If the user is fully paralyzed during the mostly-invulnerable turn of Dig, the semi-invulnerable part will not be reset until the user switches out or fully executes Dig.

In Pokémon Stadium, full paralysis will reset the semi-invulnerable turn of Dig. Mirror Move will copy Dig on either of the turns it takes to execute.

Pokémon can be caught during the semi-invulnerable stage of Dig.

Dig has a power of 100 in Generation I.

Generations II and III

Dig's power changed from 100 to 60 in Generation II.

In Generation II only, due to a glitch, when Lock-On or Mind Reader are in effect, the moves Attract, Curse, Foresight, Mean Look, Mimic, Nightmare, Spider Web, and Transform cannot hit targets in the semi-invulnerable turn of Dig, and moves cannot lower stats of targets in the semi-invulnerable turn of Dig (status moves such as String Shot will fail, and additional effects of moves such as Bubble will not activate).

Generation IV onwards

Dig's power changed from 60 to 80.

Pokémon can no longer be caught during the semi-invulnerable stage of Dig.

Outside of battle

Generation I

When used inside of a cave or certain buildings, the player is transported to the last Pokémon Center they healed at. No Badge is required to use this move outside of battle.

Due to an oversight in Pokémon Red and Blue, this can be used to escape from from the Sea Cottage or the Vermilion City Pokémon Fan Club. This was fixed in Pokémon Yellow.

Generations II to VI

When used inside of a cave or certain buildings (including Gyms), the player is transported to the entrance they used to enter the cave or building.

Generation VII

Dig can no longer be used outside of battle.

Generation VIII

In Pokémon Sword and Shield, Dig cannot be used outside of battle. In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, it is once again a field move and functions as it did in Generations II to VI.

Generation IX

Dig once again can no longer be used outside of battle.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series

Dig gives the user the digging status on the first turn. While the user is underground, the Pokémon cannot be hit by moves except Earthquake and Magnitude. Unlike the core series games, Fissure will not hit Pokémon in the digging status. Projectiles will also pass the user as if their tile was empty. On the second turn, the user attacks the enemy in front. In the Rescue Team, Explorers and Adventure Squad series, the move's damage is doubled at the end of damage calculation.

This move can be used only on a land tile; it will fail if used on any other type of tile (including the shallow water in water dungeons; while the animation will play, the move will fail regardless). Due to being a two-turn move, this move cannot be linked. Dig cannot be used in a Pokémon Tower in the Adventure Squad series.

When used by a gigantic Pokémon in Super Mystery Dungeon, Dig hits 10 tiles away instead of 1 and also pierces through enemies and walls.

Pokémon UNITE

In Pokémon UNITE, Dig is Garchomp's first move. It is obtained by evolving into Gabite at level 5 and upgrading Sand Attack into it instead of Dragon Rush. The user quickly dives underground in a short dash, then bursts from the ground at the end of the designated area or beneath the first enemy hit, dealing damage in a small radius and throwing enemies into the air. Defenses are increased by 350 for a short time after jumping out of the ground. At level 11, the knockup is increased.

Description

Games Description
MDRB The user gains the Digging status, and it attacks on the next turn. It is not possible to link this move.
MDTDS Gives the user a Digging status, which causes the Pokémon to charge power for 1 turn, then try a powerful attack on the next turn. You can't link this move.
BSL あなをほるじょうたいになり ちからをため つぎのこうどうで いりょくのたかい こうげきを くりだす このわざは ポケモンタワーでは くりだせない
Conq. The attacker digs underground in the first turn then pops up in the next turn to attack.

You dig a hole and damage an enemy on the next turn. You will be immune to moves and items while you're in the ground.*

Trivia

  • In Generation I, when Dig is used while standing on top of a warp tile, the spinning animation upon using the move is the same as the warp tile animation.
  • In Generation VIII, when Dig is used and the Pokémon resurfaces, their shadow will no longer be visible.
