The Pokémon World Coronation Series is in high gear, and Ash has been training harder than ever! He and Goh have a practice battle, then head to the Pokémon Center. There, they run into Rinto, who defeated Ash in an earlier bout and has since moved up into the Great Class. Ash challenges Rinto to an official battle: a rematch between Farfetch’d and Gallade! Farfetch’d has a shaky start, but Ash prompts it to remember the training they received from Wikstrom. After embracing a new strategy, Farfetch’d evolves into Sirfetch’d, then defeats Gallade—and Ash’s World Coronation Series ranking shoots up to 184!
Plot
Following a practice battle between Farfetch'd and Scizor, Ash and Goh decide to take them to the Pokémon Center to be healed. Along the way, they come across a wild Bellsprout, which seems to be out of energy. Goh's Grookey uses its plant revitalization powers to restore Bellsprout, and the two Grass types quickly become friends, to the point that Grookey even asks Goh to catch Bellsprout, which he gladly agrees to, adding a new Pokémon to his collection.
At the Pokémon Center, once Farfetch'd and Scizor are done healing, Ash suddenly gets a notification on his Rotom Phone about the presence of another World Coronation Series participant. To his surprise, said participant turns out to be Rinto the Gallade Trainer. Goh is surprised to learn that Rinto is participating in the World Coronation Series, given that Ash didn't receive a notification the first time they met. Rinto reveals that he had only recently entered the tournament and was in the Normal Class at the time. Now, however, he's in the Great Class, like Ash, meaning that they can have an official battle this time. Ash tells Rinto that Farfetch'd has gone through training with Wikstrom of the Kalos Elite Four and is now stronger than before. Rinto realizes that Ash is talking about the Castle of Chivalry, as he and Gallade also trained there once. Ash challenges Rinto to a battle, promising to surprise him with his progress, and Rinto accepts.
Ash and Rinto move to a nearby battlefield to have their battle, while Goh watches from the sidelines and a Drone Rotom arrives to officiate the match. At the drone's signal, Farfetch'd and Gallade step forward. Farfetch'd makes the first move with Fury Cutter, but Gallade easily brushes it off. Gallade uses Night Slash, which Farfetch'd avoids with Detect, but Gallade quickly switches to using Psycho Cut, which scores a direct hit, dealing visible damage on Farfetch'd's leek. Rinto comments on Ash and Farfetch'd's inadequacy, saying that if such a heavy leek gets deflected even once, Farfetch'd will get thrown off-balance. Goh asks how could Ash improve if he keeps calling him inadequate, but Rinto handwaves this and says that it's up to Ash to figure out the answer himself.
Gallade takes the offensive, attacking with Close Combat after breaking through a Night Slash. Ash tries to have Farfetch'd dodge with Detect, but Gallade counters with Feint, which strikes through Detect and slices off the top of Farfetch'd leek, much to the Wild Duck Pokémon's shock. For a moment, Farfetch'd seems to have lost its will to fight, but then Ash remembers Wikstrom's Aegislash, telling Farfetch'd to use the broken leek pieces as a shield and a sword. Rinto mocks this strategy and has Gallade use Psycho Cut. Farfetch'd, however, succeeds in blocking the attack, and both Pokémon begin a fierce exchange of Night Slashes, until Farfetch'd gets caught by Gallade, allowing it to use Psycho Cut from a close range and send Farfetch'd flying straight into Ash.
Farfetch'd seems to be losing confidence, and Rinto once again mocks Ash for his inadequacy. Ash, however, defends Farfetch'd, saying that their inadequacy is exactly why they'll improve to get stronger. Ash's words restore Farfetch'd's confidence, and the battle resumes. Gallade attacks with Night Slash, but Farfetch'd uses Detect to dodge it, before attacking repeatedly with Fury Cutter. Some of the Fury Cutter blows land a critical hit, finally dealing notable damage on Gallade. Just as Gallade is about to counterattack, Farfetch'd suddenly begins to glow. Its form changes, and its cut-off leek pieces turn into an actual leek sword and shield. As the glow fades, a fully evolved Sirfetch'd now stands before Ash. Rinto, finally impressed by Ash's Pokémon, has Gallade attack with Night Slash, which Sirfetch'd counters with its own Night Slash. In a surprising move, Rinto has Gallade drop its guard, taking the hit. However, this hit triggers Gallade's Ability, Justified, which boosts Gallade's Attack power when it's hit by a Dark-type move. Both Pokémon launch their final Night Slashes. After a brief struggle, Sirfetch'd overpowers Gallade and defeats the Blade Pokémon, earning Ash the victory and raising his rank from 273 to 184. Rinto accepts his defeat and admits that even he might still be inadequate. He and Ash shake hands, hoping that they both will continue to improve.
On their way back to the Cerise Laboratory, Goh gushes over how impressed he was of the way Ash battled, saying that he showed off the true strength of a knight, which Wikstrom had spoken of. A car drives by and splashes some water from a puddle, but Sirfetch'd reacts quickly and takes the splash on itself before it can hit Ash, causing Goh to start gushing even more about Sirfetch'd's chivalry.
