Release information

This card was one of four possible Wizards Black Star Promos that people could receive with the purchase of a ticket for the theatrical release of Mewtwo Strikes Back starting November 12, 1999. It has a gold foil stamp in the top right corner that reads "Kids WB Presents Pokémon The First Movie" and features artwork by Ken Sugimori. Unknown quantities of this print erroneously have the gold foil stamp on the opposite corner rotated 180 degrees. In Japan, it was available on a Special Limited Expansion Sheet that could be purchased at venues hosting the 7th Next Generation World Hobby Fair. The World Hobby Fair took place at the Fukuoka Dome, Fukuoka on December 7, 1997; at Makuhari Messe, Chiba on January 10 and 11, 1998; at the Kyocera Dome Osaka, Osaka on February 1, 1998; at the Sapporo Community Dome, Sapporo on February 8, 1998; and at the Nagoya Dome, Nagoya on February 15, 1998. These venues also hosted the regional Lizardon Mega Battle tournaments on the same dates. It was later reprinted in the Red Deck of the Japanese Quick Starter Gift Set.

A French version of the Wizards Black Star Promo printed on glossy card stock was included as an insert in the August 2000 issue of Gotta Comic in Japan, released on June 30, 2000. A Dutch version of this card was included in the Pikachu World Collection, available to purchase exclusively at Pokémon Park 2000 held at Sydney University, Sydney, Australia from September 12 to October 4, 2000. This print features a gold foil Pikachu tail stamp opposite the Black Star Promo symbol. Another Dutch version, lacking any foil stamps, was included in some VHS and DVD releases of The Power of One from October 2002. This version is translated differently to the Pikachu World Collection print and has also differences in text formatting.

Trivia

  • The character illustration is the same used on the Japanese Toyota promotional Pikachu.
  • As the Japanese version of this card was distributed as part of an Expansion Sheet, it, along with Mewtwo and Mew are often regarded as unofficial additions to the Vending Machine cards collection, dubbed "Series 00".

Origin

Recharge's Japanese name is that of Charge, a move later introduced in the Generation III Pokémon games that Pikachu can learn as a Pichu via breeding. Thunderbolt is also a move in the Pokémon games that Pikachu can learn. This card's Pokédex entry comes from Pokémon Red and Blue, though it is slightly reworded.
