The two animated shorts were uploaded to The Pokémon Company's Japanese YouTube Channel on November 1, 2012. The animated shorts were then dubbed and uploaded to the The Pokémon Company International's English YouTube Channel and Nintendo YouTube Channel on March 26, 2013.

Complete versions of the trailers incorporating additional footage were also made. The complete versions of The Adventure and The Magnagates were released on DVD at TSUTAYA in Japan on December 15, 2012.[1] The complete version of The Adventure was later re-released on The Pokémon Company's Japanese YouTube channel on July 3, 2015. The English-dubbed version includes the additional footage in both shorts.

The Japanese and English versions of the animated shorts were later re-uploaded on July 3, 2015 and October 22, 2015, respectively, in order to promote the release of Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon. The shorts, along with Team Go-Getters Out of the Gate!, Explorers of Time & Darkness, and Explorers of Sky - Beyond Time & Darkness, were also made available on Pokémon TV. These shorts were given new title card effects and renamed as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity.

Animated Short 1

(Japanese: パラダイス篇 The Paradise) is the first animated short.

Plot

Pikachu and Oshawott running toward the Request Gate

A boy awakens to the sound of someone crying for help. Looking around he notices he is on a body of water. Upon looking at his hands, he realizes he has been transformed into an Oshawott. He panics, and then finds himself plummeting toward then ground. The newly-made Oshawott then wakes up again to find himself in a forest, with a female Pikachu leaning over him, asking if he's okay. Startled, he quickly sits up and bashes his head against hers. He is surprised to hear the Pikachu talking. The scene then shifts to Pikachu narrating, claiming the area as her paradise, and talking about how she'll have adventures and meet other Pokémon, and make it a paradise for all Pokémon. Several scenes play during the narration, showing Pikachu and Oshawott talking to and working together with many other Pokémon. Pikachu then asks Oshawott if he'll help her create this paradise, and he hesitates at first, but then happily agrees. This makes Pikachu very happy, and they dance. In a scene exclusive to the English dub, the short ends with Azumarill opening the Request Gate and Pikachu and Oshawott running inside.

Animated Short 2

(Japanese: 冒険篇 The Adventure) is the second animated short.

Plot

Pikachu and Oshawott being confronted by other Pokémon

Oshawott and Pikachu are frantically running through a tunnel, and when they emerge, they almost immediately find themselves looking down a cliff. Part of the ground breaks loose under one of Pikachu's feet, and she nearly falls before Oshawott grabs her. They turn around when they hear something emerging from the ground behind them, and find themselves ambushed by four Excadrill and a Purugly, a Toxicroak, a Gigalith and a Chandelure. Just then, something appears in the sky and dives toward Oshawott. The scene changes to Umbreon and Espeon summoning a Magnagate to enter a new dungeon. They enter the Magnagate, and the others follow suit. The scene cuts to everyone walking through Glacier Palace. They are exhausted, and everyone collapses except for Oshawott. When he goes to check on them, Kyurem lands in the room. In a scene exclusive to the English dub and complete Japanese version, Kyurem tells Oshawott that the path he seeks is "the one that none may tread," and Oshawott prepares for battle.

Trivia

  • In the releases outside of Japan, it is impossible to have a female Pikachu in Gates to Infinity, though the video shows one.
  • These animated shorts make up the second set of trailers of their kind specifically created to promote new games, the first set being for Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, the third for Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, and the fourth for Pokémon Masters.
  • In Japan, these animated shorts were released alongside a third trailer entirely composed of live-action footage and 3D CGI, which is titled (Japanese: マグナゲート篇 The Magnagates).
