Emmy winner Matthew Macfadyen (Succession) is attached to star as George Smiley in Legacy Of Spies, a TV series project based on John le Carré’s series of novels featuring the career intelligence officer character.

The Ink Factory, which owns the rights to le Carré’s work, is producing and Fifth Season is distributing the drama, which has been shopped on both sides of the Atlantic, drawing interest from potential buyers, sources said.

The pitch comes with multiple scripts written by Ink Factory co-founder Stephen Cornwell and Clarissa Ingram. Silo creator Graham Yost is executive producing the potential series, based on le Carré’s series of novels featuring the character George Smiley, The Spy Who Came In From The Cold, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Honorable Schoolboy and several others, as well as some unpublished materials.

Macfadyen follows a long line of actors who have previously portrayed the character on-screen...

Comedian Nikki Glaser will return to host the 83rd annual Golden Globes, which are set to take place in January 2026 on CBS and stream on Paramount+. It will mark Glaser’s second time as Globes host after helming the award show’s 2025 edition.

FX has ordered a pilot for a new drama series starring Elizabeth Olsen, which will see the actor reunite with her “Martha Marcy May Marlene” director Sean Durkin. The pair’s new collaboration will also carry an alliterative, though shorter, title: “Seven Sisters.”

Daniel Radcliffe has joined the cast of NBC’s untitled Tracy Morgan comedy pilot from Tina Fey and Robert Carlock and writer Sam Means.

Written by Carlock and Means, the new comedy stars Morgan as a disgraced former football player on a mission to rehabilitate his image.

Radcliffe will play Arthur Tobin, an award-winning filmmaker who moves into Reggie’s (Morgan) mansion to film an immersive documentary about the former star running back.

Carlock, Means and Morgan executive produce with Fey, Eric Gurian and David Miner. Rhys Thomas is the director and executive producer of the pilot. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, where Fey, Carlock and Means are under overall deals, produces with Little Stranger, Bevel Gears and 3 Arts.

Sarsgaard will appear alongside previously announced cast members Callum Turner, Briana Middleton, Mark Strong, Joseph Lee, and Cleménce Poésy in the 10-episode drama based on the William Gibson novel of the same name.

Film and TV production happens fast. Even a series as blown about by the waves as “Doctor Odyssey” needs to navigate between the Scylla of ocean exteriors and Charybdis of network procedural turnarounds. The visual effects team, led by VFX supervisor Jason Piccioni, has only about a week and a half per episode. So on the midseason two-parter, “Shark Attack,” they needed to be very strategic about when, how, and why we see the titular predators from the deep blue sea.

That specific challenge got the IndieWire Craft team thinking about how lean and mean you could get a VFX setup to create the shark that kamikaze-swims into the Odyssey’s propeller, the orcas that ram its hull, and the menacing fins that circle in the dark waters while our hero medics are (improbably) out in a support boat.

Emily Browning, Lukas Gage, and Drake Rodger have all been cast in leading roles in the pilot, which was originally announced in December. Douglas Kiker, a contestant on “American Idol” Season 18 who memorably moved series judge Katy Perry to tears with his audition performance, has died. He was 32 years old. Kiker’s sisters, Angela Evans and Donna Kiker Carrillos-Ramirez, confirmed the news on Facebook Wednesday evening. A cause of death was not disclosed.

According to his ex-fiancée, Valerie Cook, Kiker died on Monday, March 10. An official cause of death was not released. She told the outlet that she “hates” that her children’s father died. Kiker’s sister, Angela Evans, acknowledged his death, and posted a GoFundMe to help pay for Kiker’s funeral. “This was completely unexpected, we are completely unprepared and are gonna need a little help getting him home from Denver, Colorado and being able to give the memorial that not only he but anyone deserves,” she wrote on the fundraiser. The GoFundMe’s goal is $4,500. It has raised $1,000 at the time of publication. “You will live forever in our hearts. I miss you so,” she wrote on Facebook.

The Forsytes is making history for PBS Masterpiece. The drama series, which is the third adaptation of The Forsyte Saga book series by John Galsworthy, is a rare British production to be green-lit by an American network. And now, a U.K. channel is picking it up for distribution. Typically with PBS programming, it’s British shows that get picked up by the network for U.S. distribution. Clearly, there’s something special about this upcoming period drama beyond just the star-studded cast that includes Francesca Annis, Millie Gibson, Jack Davenport, Stephen Moyer, Josette Simon, Tom Durant-Pritchard, Eleanor Tomlinson, Susan Hampshire OBE — a returning star from the 1960s BBC adaptation — and more. The Forsytes cast was announced in April 2024. PBS said it’s “a lavish reimagining” of Galsworthy’s books that’s “planned as a returning series,” which means the network intends for it to be more than one season.

Joni Mitchell covers are not for the faint of heart or voice, so Amanda Seyfried’s decision to cover a verse from the singer’s 1971 classic “California” on “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon” last week was a brave one — not just because of the celestial high note on the chorus, but because she also accompanied herself on the dulcimer.

Lionsgate TV Group chair/chief creative officer Kevin Beggs has been tapped to serve as the new chairman of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the org announced Thursday. Beggs takes over for Fred Cohen, who remains at the International Academy as foundation chairman and executive committee member.

Beggs had previously been treasurer of the International Academy; that position will now be held by former MGM Worldwide Networks, AMC Global and Sundance Channel Global exec Bruce Tuchman, who had most recently been secretary.

Comcast chief Brian Roberts has donated $125 million to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to build a new patient tower and refurbish existing facilities.

The gift unveiled Thursday is the largest single donation made in the 170-year history of the hospital that was the first in the nation to focus on pediatric health. The donation from Roberts and his wife, Aileen Roberts, establishes Roberts Children’s Health, a 20-story inpatient tower that is expected to open in 2028.

Comedic culinary competition “Gastronauts” has been renewed for Season 2 at indie streamer Dropout.

Hosted by comedian and Dropout staple Jordan Myrick, the show features a rotating group of three comedians each episode, who all have “specific, ridiculous” culinary challenges for each episode’s group of chefs.

Among several of the new chefs set up for the challenge in Season 2 are Amanda Palomino, Saransh Oberoi (“Beat Bobby Flay”), Christina Xenos (“Chopped”) and Joi Fowler (“Masterchef”).
