Film and TV production happens fast. Even a series as blown about by the waves as “Doctor Odyssey” needs to navigate between the Scylla of ocean exteriors and Charybdis of network procedural turnarounds. The visual effects team, led by VFX supervisor Jason Piccioni, has only about a week and a half per episode. So on the midseason two-parter, “Shark Attack,” they needed to be very strategic about when, how, and why we see the titular predators from the deep blue sea.
That specific challenge got the IndieWire Craft team thinking about how lean and mean you could get a VFX setup to create the shark that kamikaze-swims into the Odyssey’s propeller, the orcas that ram its hull, and the menacing fins that circle in the dark waters while our hero medics are (improbably) out in a support boat.
Piccioni told IndieWire that they worked with FuseFX for the show’s ambitious two-parter — indeed,...

The Forsytes is making history for PBS Masterpiece. The drama series, which is the third adaptation of The Forsyte Saga book series by John Galsworthy, is a rare British production to be green-lit by an American network. And now, a U.K. channel is picking it up for distribution. Typically with PBS programming, it’s British shows that get picked up by the network for U.S. distribution. Clearly, there’s something special about this upcoming period drama beyond just the star-studded cast that includes Francesca Annis, Millie Gibson, Jack Davenport, Stephen Moyer, Josette Simon, Tom Durant-Pritchard, Eleanor Tomlinson, Susan Hampshire OBE — a returning star from the 1960s BBC adaptation — and more. The Forsytes cast was announced in April 2024. PBS said it’s “a lavish reimagining” of Galsworthy’s books that’s “planned as a returning series,” which means the network intends for it to be more than one season.

Joni Mitchell covers are not for the faint of heart or voice, so Amanda Seyfried’s decision to cover a verse from the singer’s 1971 classic “California” on “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon” last week was a brave one — not just because of the celestial high note on the chorus, but because she also accompanied herself on the dulcimer.
Social media quickly jumped in, with fans urging Seyfried to be cast as the young Mitchell in Cameron Crowe’s forthcoming biopic.
However, Seyfried insists the viral “Tonight Show” moment was not part of a campaign to try to win the role.

The term “appropriate adult” may be new to some folks living outside of England or Wales, but its significance to the British crime drama “Adolescence” keenly transcends any prior awareness. Used formally, the title refers to a parent, guardian, or social worker required to be present when police detain or interview anyone under 18 years old. The juvenile being questioned has the right to choose their appropriate adult — typically, they go with their mother or father — and their selected advocate can look out for them, making sure the child isn’t tricked into answering questions they shouldn’t answer or giving up any rights they aren’t aware they have.
In “Adolescence,” Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper) chooses his father, Eddie (Stephen Graham), as his appropriate adult when the 13-year-old boy is charged with murder. During the teenager’s frantic arrest, booking, and interrogation, Jamie repeatedly asks for his dad, and Eddie...

Tom Cruise really is everywhere: Climbing the side of building, hanging off a plane, and apparently living rent-free in the minds of the “Severance” team.
“Severance” lead star Adam Scott confirmed that “the king” Cruise was a direct inspiration for the opening sequence of Season 2. Scott’s character Mark sprints down the Lumon hallway for the scene, and Scott tried to emulate Cruise’s famed run in various action films. Scott in turn also realized just how much work it takes Cruise to make the run look effortless.
