Melbourne: World’s Most Liveable City 2014

Melbourne has been named the most livable city in the world for the 4th year in a row.

The Economist Intelligence Unit ranked Melbourne the world’s most liveable city once again. Melbourne has won following a survey that ranks over 140 cities. It wins based on factors including healthcare, infrastructure and education.

That’s a pretty mean feat. Melbourne beat close competition from places such as Sydney, and Austria’s Vienna. The top 10 included 4 Australian cities, alongside 3 in Canada and 2 in Europe.

  1. Melbourne, Australia
  2. Vienna, Austria
  3. Vancouver, Canada
  4. Toronto, Canada
  5. Adelaide, Australia
  6. Calgary, Canada
  7. Sydney, Australia
  8. Helsinki, Finland
  9. Perth, Australia
  10. Auckland, New Zealand

To celebrate victory for the capital of Victoria, I’ve decided to upload some of my snaps of the city. As the adage goes, a city truly comes to life at night. Melbourne is no different.

Melbourne is a fantastic city even during the day. Unfortunately, my daytime Melbourne pictures are pretty drab. The Yarra, which flows through the city, lends itself to the cityscape to create some excellent places for photography. Even providing some pretty neat bridge shots.

Yeah, this is slightly blurry, but you get the idea.

Melbourne is host to many sightseeing spots, including St. Kilda beach, the Eureka tower and Flinders Street Station.

As you walk around the city you will notice how busy it is, but at the same time how mysteriously quiet it is. There is always something happening somewhere in the city, and the river banks are no exception.

This picture (if you look closely) captures the Crown Casino, and the famous flame display which burns on the hour. Flames shoot from the fire-spitting columns that line the walkway. The heat from these is tremendous. They are a welcome heat source for those acclimatised to Melbourne’s winter nights.

I intended this to be a picture of all the flames together. Guess who screwed up and couldn’t get the camera settings sorted in time? Yep. It may have been me. Instead, you can inspire yourself with this up (or down, I’m not entirely sure) Yarra shot:

In this next picture, we are looking across Melbourne towards Flinders Street Station. If you look closely it is pretty much right in front of you and you can’t actually miss it. The clock tower to the left of the centre is all part of the station that runs beneath it. As you can see it is actually pretty big.

And there you have it. Now you too can see why they’ve named Melbourne the world’s most liveable city for the 4th year running.
