Release of OpenMP 5.1 with Vital Usability Enhancements
.
The OpenMP ARB has released the OpenMP API Version 5.1. With this release of the standard, OpenMP strengthens its handling of accelerator devices, allows improved optimization, and supports the latest versions of C, C++, and Fortran.

“OpenMP 5.1 represents the culmination of the past two years of work within the OpenMP Language Committee,” said Bronis R. de Supinski, the Language Committee Chair. “While the primary focus has been enhancements, clarifications and corrections to the 5.0 specification, we have added several useful new features, such as support for interoperability with lower level APIs like CUDA and HIP.”

Download the specification, reference guide, and supplementary source code from the OpenMP website.

Best Paper Award at IWOMP

The paper on FAROS was awarded the Best Paper Award at IWOMP2020. The FAROS framework helps in finding OpenMP compilation issues and resolving them. This helps improve OpenMP compilers.

Congratulations to the authors!
Tom Scogland, Johannes Doerfert, Ignacio Laguna, and Giorgis Georgakoudis

See the slides on the IWOMP 2020 program and find the FAROS paper in the proceedings.

OpenMP at SC20

Even as a virtual event, we had a good showing at SC'20.

TUTORIALS:
We had three tutorials. If you missed them, they will be available on the SC'20 site for another 6 months:

  • Advanced OpenMP: Host Performance and 5.0 Features
  • Programming your GPU with OpenMP: A hands-on Introduction
  • The OpenMP Common Core: A hands-on Introduction

BOOTH TALKS:
We had TWENTY booth talks this year! See all the videos plus download the presentations on our website.

GIVEAWAYS:
We held daily drawing November 17, 18, and 19 to give away books. Thank you to everyone who participated!

See more details about OpenMP at SC'20 -- and we look forward to seeing you (hopefully in-person) at SC'21!

New OpenMP Use Cases

.A roundup of the latest OpenMP use cases:
  • ParFlow 3.7.0: ParFlow is a numerical model that simulates the hydrologic cycle from the bedrock to the top of the plant canopy.
