Unique Characteristics of Cypress

About The Cypress Species

Cypress is a softwood wood but it has properties like hardwood. Cypress is a common name for various coniferous trees. There are more than 12 true species of cypress. Tree height can average between 75 to 150 ft. Like cedar, cypress can be a good choice for exterior applications because of its decay and water-resistant properties. Bald Cypress, located on the eastern side of the United States, is a slow-growing tree that takes a long time to mature but will survive a wide variety of growing conditions. Cypress color tends to be a light, yellowish brown with the sapwood a nearly white color. Some boards can have scattered pockets of darker wood that have been attacked by fungi, sometimes called pecky cypress. According to some, the deeper the color of the heartwood, the more decay resistant it is. Cypress’ grain is straight with a coarse texture, and it’s raw, unfinished surface may have a greasy feel.
