“Smooth stone beach beache in Washington Island”
Schoolhouse Beach is on a cove that is a sheltered harbor with a smooth stone beach. The beach got its name from the log schoolhouse built there in 1850. There is a fine for anyone removing stones from the beach.Schoolhouse Beach got its name from a schoolhouse that was built there back in 1850. The school was made of logs. The beach consists of, instead of sand, millions of smooth stones. Bring your flip flops along because this beach is very difficult to walk on when you don't have some type of foot covering.
Schoolhouse Beach was our first stop once we arrived at Washington Island, but we could have stayed there all day. My kids enjoyed stacking the rocks and braving the chilly water, while the adults relaxed on the beach and watched them play. Absolutely worth the trip, and we hope to visit here again some day!
Amazing views mixed with history of "Death's Door", this unique beach is not made of sand but of Great Lakes polished smooth stones! Please feel them, enjoy them, make beach art with them... But if you take one from the beach (and it is tempting) it will cost you! Stealing one of these precious stones comes with a $250.00 fine! The whole of Washington Island is amazing, I highly recommend a weekend trip for anyone!
