UPDATE: Jan. 1, 2025, 5:00 a.m. EST This story has been updated with our latest recommendations.

A lot of guys have a love-hate relationship with the apps, but what's the alternative?

Sure, even the best dating apps for men can be a pain, yet meeting someone organically can feel nearly impossible. Between work and trying to maintain some semblance of a social life, who has the time to actually meet people? That's the promise of online dating.

The apps promise to deliver an unlimited number of meet-cutes right to your phone — no serendipity required. Some dating apps also use in-depth questionnaires and research-backed matching algorithms to connect you with a curated selection of singles. This means less time swiping and more time on dates with actual potential.

Do dating apps really work?

Look, we get it — a lot of guys are burned out on the apps.

Dating as a man in the 21st century is tough. It's not just the pressure to make the first move or the fear of rejection if you do — it's the endless swiping through fake profiles, AI-generated thirst traps, bots posing as potential matches, and the relentless Instagram models trying to lure you into their OnlyFans scam. Men also face matches with impossibly high expectations. (Have you heard of the 6-6-6 rule? Believers only date men who are six feet tall, have a six-figure income, and a six-pack of abs.)

Despite these challenges (and the very long list of others we didn't mention), there are still plenty of real people out there looking for love, just like you. It's just a matter of finding the best dating apps and putting in the effort to weed out the fakes and the flakes.

We're not going to sugarcoat it and say everyone finds love on their first swipe (or even their first app). But real men and women are finding connections online every day. One 2023 Pew Research Center survey found that one in 10 partnered adults met their significant other through online dating. The numbers are even higher for young people and the LGBTQ+ community.

When asked about their experiences with dating apps, 53 percent of users said they had a positive experience, with 14 percent rating it as "very positive." And there's more good news — 57 percent of guys reported positive experiences and results compared to 48 percent of women.

The best dating apps for guys who know what they want

This guide is your cheat sheet to the best dating apps for men in 2025. We've done the research and found the apps that are actually worth your time. Whether you're looking for something casual, something serious, or something free, we have a dating app to recommend

Pro tip: Don't be afraid to experiment. Try out a few different apps and see what works for you. And most importantly, don't get discouraged! Sometimes, the occasional bad date or disappointing flirtation is just the price you pay to meet the match of a lifetime.

Our Pick

Hinge

Best dating app for guys overall

Who it's for:

Hinge is for guys in their 20s or 30s who want to connect with someone on a deeper level — and who are looking for the best free dating apps. It's the perfect spot for younger folks who are done with the hookup scene and ready to find someone they can actually connect with (beyond physical attraction).

It's got the modern feel of Tinder but with a focus on meaningful connections (like Match). Whether you're looking for a casual fling or a long-term relationship, Hinge helps you cut through the noise.

Why we picked this:

Okay, let's be honest — nobody actually enjoys using dating apps. But Hinge is different. Their "designed to be deleted" motto isn't just some marketing gimmick. They're rooting for you to find someone special (so you can finally delete the app). It's a refreshing change from the usual dating app BS, and it might actually restore your faith in finding something real.

And it seems to be working. Hinge's own data shows that 90 percent of users report having great first dates, with 72 percent wanting a second date. That's a pretty impressive success rate.

In recent news, Hinge's been pushing a new initiative it calls "dating forward," a concept that encourages you to be more intentional with your matches (aka, taking the time to check out profiles and engage with content instead of just swiping mindlessly on autopilot). The idea is to focus on quality over quantity so you can connect with people who are on the same page.

To help you stay on track and, you know, get some dates, the company also added a "Your Turn Limits" feature. It basically nudges you to respond to messages, so you're less likely to get stuck in a one-sided chat or ghosted altogether. If you have eight or more unanswered messages in your inbox, you'll need to either respond to someone or unmatch them to start "liking" again.

Plus, with personalized prompts and profile customization features (e.g., audio, video, posts, polls, etc.), Hinge makes finding someone who gets you just a little bit easier.

Tinder

Best hookup app for men

Read our full review of Tinder Premium.

Who it's for:

On the other side of the spectrum, we have Tinder — the OG swiping app and undisputed champion of casual hookups. Whether you're seeking a one-night stand, a friends-with-benefits situation, or just some casual fun, Tinder is the place to find it.

With its infamous swipe-and-match interface, you can quickly browse through what seems like an endless stream of potential partners (most of whom are just looking for a good time). It's the perfect app for guys who know exactly what they want and aren't afraid to go for it.

Why we picked this:

Despite our love/hate relationship with Tinder, it's a tried-and-true option for casual hookups. (We'd be surprised if you haven't already downloaded it at least once.) Tinder pioneered the now-ubiquitous swiping function, revolutionizing the world of online dating and boasting 1.6 billion swipes per day, a stat that dwarfs other dating apps.

Tinder may require more swiping and looking, but unlike more niche apps, you can find active Tinder users all over the world. One good thing about Tinder's rashness? Putting "Just looking to hook up" on your Tinder profile is an innocuous move. On an app where so many people are looking for so many different things, most people actually appreciate the heads-up in case they're looking for a different type of relationship.

In July 2024, Tinder rolled out an AI-powered Photo Selector that analyzes your pics and helps you pick the best ones for your profile. Just snap a selfie, give Tinder access to your camera roll, and boom — the app will tell you which photos are most likely to score you a match.

Sounds easy right? But here's the thing: this convenience comes at a cost. To work its magic, the Photo Selector needs access to your photos and facial recognition data. While Tinder says they delete this data after you've used the tool and don't store your camera roll pics, it does raise some privacy concerns. Is a potentially higher match rate worth the potential privacy trade-off? That's up to you to decide.

Apparently, Tinder execs created this tool after realizing that a lot of users, especially straight dudes, have trouble picking the right pics. Their research showed that 52 percent of young singles struggle with photo selection, and those under 25 spend an average of 33 minutes on this task. We know that straight single women tend to be more attracted to profiles with at least four images that showcase a man's personality, and having more than one face pic increases a guy's chances of matching by 71 percent. So, fellas, take note!

Match

Best paid dating app

Read our full review of Match.

Who it's for:

Match is the dating app for guys who are ready to commit and willing to invest to make a meaningful connection. With a quarter of users under 30 and nearly half between 30 and 49, there's a diverse range of potential partners to connect with.

And don't let its 25+ years of experience fool you — it's evolved with a modern and innovative interface and features that leave behind any notion of its 90s roots.

Why we picked this:

Okay, we'll level with you — Match isn't free. But if you're serious about finding a real connection (and not just another swipe-and-ghost situation), it might be worth spending a little to find the one.

Match has a well-populated and balanced user base, with a near-even split between men and women. And because it has a large user base, you're more likely to find what you're looking for, i.e., single parents can find other users who have kids. There's a pretty stacked feed of people to match with, even if you're looking for love in a less-populated area.

The dating platform has recently cracked down on fake profiles, requiring three photos for verification (though you can add up to 26 to your profile). This shows they're serious about creating a safer and more authentic dating environment. In fact, Match Group, the company behind Match, removes an average of 44 spam accounts every minute across its portfolio of dating apps.

While the free version of Match is limited, upgrading to a paid membership can get you additional features like the ability to explore unlimited profiles, see who likes you, and send unlimited introductions.

A drawn hand holding a phone with the eharmony logo

eharmony

Best dating app for marriage

Read our full review of eharmony.

Who it's for:

Eharmony is the best dating app for the grown-ass man who knows what he wants: real, lasting love. It's not for the casual dater or the guy who's just looking for a fling. This app is for users who are ready to settle down, build a life with someone special, and maybe even start a family.

The majority of users are established professionals between the ages of 35 and 54, so if you're out of your 20s and ready to get serious, eharmony is a great place to start. It's also a better fit for men who identify as conservative or value religion in their dating preferences.

Why we picked this:

Eharmony has a serious track record; a spokesperson for the site says it's been used by 54 million people and is responsible for 4 percent of U.S. marriages. This is why we chose it as the best dating app for men looking for marriage. While that doesn't guarantee you'll be walking down the aisle within the year, it does mean you'll be swimming in a pool of singles who are open to commitment, whether that's exclusivity, meeting the family, or moving in together.

What was once a doozy of a sign-up process is now short, sweet, and free of the corny, religious questions that used to scare off younger folks. The revamped questionnaire now covers a whopping 32 dimensions of compatibility (up from 29). Instead of blatantly asking if you get mad easily or are emotionally stable, eharmony may ask how you handle apologizing after a fight or if a certain action would piss you off. And yes, they still ask about your hobbies and interests, but now it feels less like a job interview and more like a friendly chat.

While it was once known for its more conservative approach to matchmaking, the platform has made a few changes in recent years to become more inclusive and welcoming to the LGBTQ+ community. In October 2024, eharmony partnered with GLAAD, the world's largest LGBTQ+ media advocacy organization, to better understand the needs and experiences of LGBTQ+ daters and learn more about how dating apps influence coming out and identity disclosure in the digital age. We'll be monitoring the app to see if it becomes a good option for LGBTQ+ singles in the new year.

SilverSingles illustration

SilverSingles

Best dating app for men over 50

Who it’s for:

Don't let the name fool you, SilverSingles isn't just for guys who are ready for retirement (though it's a great option if you are!). It's actually designed for any man over 50 who's looking for a genuine connection. Whether you're hoping to find a serious relationship, a casual dating partner, or even just a new friend, SilverSingles is a great option.

So, even if you’re not a “silver fox,” this dating app is worth considering.

Why we picked this:

SilverSingles is the best dating site for men over 50 who are looking for a genuine connection. This platform prioritizes compatibility, using a detailed personality quiz (similar to the one used by EliteSingles) to match you with potential partners who share your values and interests.

Instead of swiping through endless photos, SilverSingles encourages you to really get to know someone. Sure, setting up a profile might take a bit longer than on those swipe-happy apps, but the matches tend to be more promising — and less likely to ghost you.

The registration process is straightforward, with free and paid membership options. However, we’ve noticed that SilverSingles isn’t quite as LGBTQ-friendly as other dating apps. While you can set your preferences for same-sex matches, you can't receive matches from both genders at the same time. Hopefully, they'll update this in the future.

A drawn hand holding a phone with the Grindr logo

Grindr

Best dating app for gay men

Who it's for:

Grindr is the world's leading dating app for gay, bi, trans, and queer men. Whether you're looking for hookups, dates, friends, or something more serious, Grindr helps you connect with other men in the LGBTQ+ community. It's also a great way to explore the local scene when you're traveling.

Basically, if you're a man who's interested in men, Grindr is the place to be. It's where you can be yourself, meet like-minded guys, and find exactly what you're looking for (no matter what that might be).

Why we picked this:

You know what you're getting with Grindr: some serious adulation, a few pushy messages, and dick pics. But finding and meeting up with men on Tinder or OkCupid isn't always easy, especially if you're in a small town with a meager queer community. Whether it's your first time with a guy and you want someone experienced, or you're the experienced guy, it's nice to have Grindr in your back pocket.

That's not to say it's not for relationships. We know of many couples who met on Grindr. One survey found that 56 percent of Grindr users believed they could find true love on the app. The Grindr for Equality campaign also pushes the app past being a simple hookup facilitator by advocating for sexual health and the safety of LGBTQ+ people around the world.

Within the last six months, the app's been rolling out various travel features to help you find the best queer-friendly spots and meet cool locals (and maybe even find a hot date while you're at it). For example, Grindr's "Roam" feature lets you set your location to anywhere in the world for an hour, so you can chat with guys and check out the scene before you even pack your bags. But, with new features comes new complaints about bugs, new feature limitations, and paywalls.

Bisexual men have also reported mixed experiences on the app, including biphobia. This thread of Reddit users has experienced it in some way, describing the disappointment they feel from not being supported by their LGBTQ+ community and getting messages like "vaginas are gross" at the first mention of being bisexual.

OkCupid

Best dating app for liberals

Read our full review of OkCupid.

Who it's for:

Are you tired of getting caught in the trap of going on a date with someone who looks like a goddess but turns out to be a total dud when it comes to what really matters? OkCupid is here to weed them out. This app is for left-wing guys who value substance and refuse to settle. If you're passionate about social justice, you'll find plenty of like-minded people on OkCupid.

But it's not just about debating the latest headlines or planning your next protest. OkCupid is also a great place to find someone who's down for a casual fling (or maybe even something more).

Why we picked this:

OkCupid goes beyond surface-level swiping by letting you connect with potential partners based on what really matters to you. Want to make sure you're on the same page about the important stuff? OkCupid lets you express your values and filter out potential matches with different dealbreakers. Whether it's gun control, vaccinations, or social justice, you can take a stance and find someone who sees eye-to-eye. Of course, you're more likely to find a match if you're on the liberal end of the political spectrum, so conservatives might have better luck elsewhere.

While politics play a significant role, OKC understands that there's more to romance than just political alignment. They make it easy to showcase your personality with in-depth profiles that are fun to create. The questions are thoughtfully designed to explore your dating style without being overly sentimental. And the best part? The free version is actually functional. You can do pretty much everything you need to without shelling out for a premium subscription.

What sets OkCupid apart is its matching algorithm, which calculates the percentage of compatibility based on shared answers to these questions. This algorithm has been refined and perfected since OkCupid's launch in 2004, helping you find matches with genuine compatibility.

Coffee Meets Bagel

Best dating app for young professionals

Who it's for:

Coffee Meets Bagel (CMB) is like the younger, more laid-back cousin of EliteSingles. It's perfect for guys who are tired of the endless swiping game and want a more curated dating experience.

Instead of bombarding you with a ton of profiles, CMB delivers a select few "Bagels" each day – potential matches chosen just for you based on your preferences and interests. It's kind of like having a wingman who actually knows what he's doing.

Why we picked this:

Tons of active users is usually a plus. It is nice to know that your options are virtually limitless, but having 20 new messages every time you sign on can be jarring. This happens on eharmony and Tinder alike — people want connection, and they want it now. CMB's unhurried approach is great for men who are out of practice, introverted, or don't feel like scrolling whenever they have a free minute. It's also a great app for young professionals looking for a serious partner.

And CMB knows how to keep things moving. They give you seven days to message a match, which is just enough time to make a connection without the pressure of a 24-hour deadline (looking at you, Bumble). Plus, it weeds out those matches who aren't really serious about dating.

EliteSingles

Best dating app for working professionals

Read our full EliteSingles review.

Who it's for:

EliteSingles is a dating app for ambitious, intelligent men who are looking for a partner who's just as driven and successful as they are. If you're a professional who values stimulating conversation, intellectual compatibility, and shared career goals, EliteSingles attempts to offer more specificity than eharmony and Match.

EliteSingles is about finding someone who challenges you intellectually, supports your ambitions, and shares your vision for the future. It's about finding a partner who's not just a pretty face, but a true equal.

Why we picked this:

EliteSingles offers a targeted approach to finding compatible matches. The app considers factors such as education level, career trajectory, and professional goals to ensure that the matches you encounter have a similar outlook on life. With EliteSingles, you can elevate your dating experience by connecting with individuals who share your dedication to personal and professional success.

Rather than being thrown into an endless pool of profiles, EliteSingles attempts to match you through the Five Factor Personality Test. Via 29 algorithms, the site will try to find singles to complement your attachment style, selfishness, and more stuff that you should try to be honest about.

Plus, you can take comfort knowing you won’t deal with fake or scam accounts, as EliteSingles manually verifies all accounts with an upscale fraud detection system. However, though you can technically filter potential matches by profession (for example, a teacher looking to date another teacher), it’s difficult for any dating site to track down every person lying about their job or how much money they make.

How we tested

To bring you the most accurate and up-to-date information on the best dating apps for men, we put them to the test.

Our team created profiles on each platform and explored their features, matching algorithms, and overall user experience. We paid close attention to the quality and diversity of each app's community, and we consulted Mashable's own Dating & Relationships writers to get their expert insights.

We also considered real-world success stories to see which apps are actually helping men find what they're looking for. While your personal results may vary, we're confident this list is a great starting point for finding the right dating app for you in 2025.

Note: As of Nov. 2024, we've removed our recommendation for Zoosk. Though setting up a profile on the site is easy (and free), once you're in, you're surrounded by bots and a site that feels like it hasn't been updated in years.

Frequently Asked Questions

On balance, we have to give it up to Tinder. The legendary swiping app has a massive user base (and a lot of the same users as Bumble, in our experience) that makes it easier to find a connection. Ultimately, we think women will have a better experience on Bumble, and men will have a better experience on Tinder. That being said, we do think Bumble is the better option for shy guys, as Bumble's "Opening Moves" feature creates a more low-key environment for first contact.

For a casual fling, Kiana Reeves, Somatic Sex Educator, Intimacy Coach, and Chief Education Officer at Foria, says Tinder is one of the easiest options. “Its large user base makes it easier to connect with people from all backgrounds and interests,” Reeves tells Mashable. “For men pursuing a casual hookup with other men, Grindr is a no-strings-attached platform that matches you with singles in your immediate vicinity.”

But if you’re in your 20s or 30s and looking for something more serious, Reeves recommends downloading Hinge. And if you're really serious, pay for a premium membership on a site like Match or eharmony.

The answer to this question depends on your age and who you’re looking for, but if you’re ready to commit, eharmony is your best bet — we’ve ranked it the best dating app for serious relationships in a few of our dating guides. If you’re not quite ready to settle down, Match is a more flexible middle ground. (It’s kind of expensive, but that helps weed out people who aren't serious about finding a match.) If you're looking for a free dating site for men that's not just a hookup site, then we recommend Hinge.

Again, this depends on what you're looking for. Grindr is great for quick hookups and the massive user base — no doubt about it. You can't understate the impact its had on modern gay culture. But, sometimes, you want more than just a quick fling, right?

If you're looking for something a bit more meaningful, Archer is worth checking out. It's geared towards guys who are serious about finding a relationship. Think of it as the "anti-Grindr" in that sense.

At the other end of the spectrum, consider Sniffies, especially if you're into the cruising scene. It's all about meeting up in person and seeing where things go. Just be aware that like Grindr it's definitely on the more explicit side.
