7-day hold period
Currently, we put usurpation requests on hold for 30 days after notifying the target user. However, on English Wikipedia, we only have a 7-day hold period. Do you think we should adopt the same 7-day hold here on Meta? I feel that a week is enough time for target users to respond. From my experience, only one user has opposed a usurpation, and that was within a week of the notification, so I believe a 7-day hold would work just fine. Should I open an RfC to gain consensus and move forward with this? – <b style="color:black; font-family: Tahoma">DreamRimmer</b> (talk) 18:20, 1 October 2024 (UTC)

*Maybe 14 days, and renaming hasn't been a local issue in a very long time - local projects shouldn't have special usurp processes. — <span style="color:#FF9933; font-weight:bold; font-family:monotype;">xaosflux</span> <span style="color:#009933;">Talk</span> 19:36, 3 October 2024 (UTC)
*oppose 7 days is far too short considering renames are global. 30 days appears to be the ideal length, giving enough time for users across any project to respond while also making it harder to make frivolous usurpation requests. The usurpation process on enwiki seems to have been grandfathered in from when renames were still local processes done by bureaucrats; presently, it only accepts requests from accounts whose home wikis are enwiki, presumably to avoid the issues of usurping someone's username from a smaller language wiki who may not log in regularly after giving them a scant 7 days to respond. I have no problem with closing down that page and redirecting all usurpation requests to Meta (considering we frequently get confused requests from confused people). —<span style="color:#0040FF">k6ka</span> <span title="Canadian!" style="color:red">🍁</span> (<span style="color:#0080FF">Talk</span> · <span style="color:#0B4C5F">Contributions</span>) 12:16, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
* I would support 14 days, but I think longer than 7 days makes sense. Also would support enwiki aligning their process with the global standard as renaming is global now. – Ajraddatz (talk) 15:49, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
*:I think I support this, too – 14 days seems just right given that renaming is global, but I've got no issues with 7. --SHB2000 <small>(t • c)</small> 03:46, 7 November 2024 (UTC)
*:Since the 7-day period did not meet with full approval, I can also support 14 days - per SHB2000. * Oppose for 7 days as on enwiki only local account related usurpation is handled while on metawiki crosswiki request are handled. While users on enwiki might me little more active so 7 days makes more sense but on samll wikis users are not typically that active so people might entirely miss the 7 days notifications. &#8208;&#8208;1997kB&nbsp;(talk) 13:41, 5 October 2024 (UTC)

* Weak Support 7 days, however 14 days would gain my support, as there's no point waiting a month for completely inactive users who edited decades ago, but I do think some sort of global standard needs adopting, because every project having a different policy is confusing and means people might game the system by requesting on a different wiki. Zippybonzo (talk) 11:26, 14 October 2024 (UTC)
* I would also say, that 7 days seems a little short in the global context. But I could agree to something like 14 days, as also suggest above. --Zabe (talk) 13:44, 7 November 2024 (UTC)

This discussion was open for 40 days. Consensus for a waiting period of 7d has not been reached.

Not everyone left a comment regarding the compromise to wait 14d. @DreamRimmer, I‘d suggest to start a new discussion regarding a 14d-period if you still want to change the current system. Best regards, --TenWhile6 16:27, 10 November 2024 (UTC)

14-day hold period (for Meta and English Wikipedia)

In line with the previous discussion on a 7-day hold period, I am proposing a 14-day hold period for usurpation requests, as suggested by the closer of that discussion. Please add your support, opposition, or comments below. After a two-week discussion period, we will proceed based on the consensus. – DreamRimmer (talk) 17:43, 10 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
