Talk:Spam blacklist

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
This is an archived version of this page, as edited by Billinghurst (talk | contribs) at 04:02, 18 April 2023 (stdlabs.com: Added using SBHandler). It may differ significantly from the current version.

Latest comment: 1 year ago by Billinghurst in topic Proposed additions
Shortcut:
WM:SPAM
WM:SBL
The associated page is used by the MediaWiki Spam Blacklist extension, and lists regular expressions which cannot be used in URLs in any page in Wikimedia Foundation projects (as well as many external wikis). Any Meta administrator can edit the spam blacklist; either manually or with SBHandler. For more information on what the spam blacklist is for, and the processes used here, please see Spam blacklist/About.

Proposed additions
Please provide evidence of spamming on several wikis. Spam that only affects a single project should go to that project's local blacklist. Exceptions include malicious domains and URL redirector/shortener services. Please follow this format. Please check back after submitting your report, there could be questions regarding your request.
Proposed removals
Please check our list of requests which repeatedly get declined. Typically, we do not remove domains from the spam blacklist in response to site-owners' requests. Instead, we de-blacklist sites when trusted, high-volume editors request the use of blacklisted links because of their value in support of our projects. Please consider whether requesting whitelisting on a specific wiki for a specific use is more appropriate - that is very often the case.
Other discussion
Troubleshooting and problems - If there is an error in the blacklist (i.e. a regex error) which is causing problems, please raise the issue here.
Discussion - Meta-discussion concerning the operation of the blacklist and related pages, and communication among the spam blacklist team.
#wikimedia-external-linksconnect - Real-time IRC chat for co-ordination of activities related to maintenance of the blacklist.
Whitelists
There is no global whitelist, so if you are seeking a whitelisting of a url at a wiki then please address such matters via use of the respective Mediawiki talk:Spam-whitelist page at that wiki, and you should consider the use of the template {{edit protected}} or its local equivalent to get attention to your edit.

Please sign your posts with ~~~~ after your comment. This leaves a signature and timestamp so conversations are easier to follow.

Completed requests are marked as {{added}}/{{removed}} or {{declined}}, and are generally archived quickly. Additions and removals are logged · current log 2024/12.

SpBot archives all sections tagged with {{Section resolved|1=~~~~}} after 7 days and sections whose most recent comment is older than 15 days.

Proposed additions

This section is for proposing that a website be blacklisted; add new entries at the bottom of the section, using the basic URL so that there is no link (example.com, not http://www.example.com). Provide links demonstrating widespread spamming by multiple users on multiple wikis. Completed requests will be marked as {{added}} or {{declined}} and archived.

pro-goroda.ru

This links is not blocked by the condition \bpro-(?!(goroda|speleo|otdyh|box)).*?\.ru\b, and in my opinion, completely in vain. The address is now used by an unknown person to publish a "rating of the most promising NFT games". Even if the rating is impartial, which is hard to believe, it is impossible to use it as a reliable source due to anonymity. I do not see links to this site from the Russian Wikipedia, which indicates that the media that occupied this url earlier was not considered a reliable source by Russian-speaking community. The only link to this site from the English Wikipedia articles can easily be replaced, for example by [1]. In my opinion, it is better to remove this exception from the condition.--Yellow Horror (talk) 10:25, 1 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Yellow Horror: The global search result (gs^^) shows usage, which would mean that we need a greater level of conversation to add the domain to the blacklist as it is not a clear contender using the criteria at the top of the page. Please also see /Archives/2013-12#pro-goroda.ru which has this domain as an exception to the original rule. You may be better to initiate that as a local conversation at Defer to w:en:Mediawiki talk:spam-blacklist.  — billinghurst sDrewth 00:22, 16 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Proposed additions (Bot reported)

This section is for domains which have been added to multiple wikis as observed by a bot.

These are automated reports, please check the records and the link thoroughly, it may report good links! For some more info, see Spam blacklist/Help#COIBot_reports. Reports will automatically be archived by the bot when they get stale (less than 5 links reported, which have not been edited in the last 7 days, and where the last editor is COIBot).

Sysops
  • If the report contains links to less than 5 wikis, then only add it when it is really spam
  • Otherwise just revert the link-additions, and close the report; closed reports will be reopened when spamming continues
  • To close a report, change the LinkStatus template to closed ({{LinkStatus|closed}})
  • Please place any notes in the discussion section below the HTML comment

The LinkWatchers report domains meeting the following criteria:

  • When a user mainly adds this link, and the link has not been used too much, and this user adds the link to more than 2 wikis
  • When a user mainly adds links on one server, and links on the server have not been used too much, and this user adds the links to more than 2 wikis
  • If ALL links are added by IPs, and the link is added to more than 1 wiki
  • If a small range of IPs have a preference for this link (but it may also have been added by other users), and the link is added to more than 1 wiki.

Proposed removals

This section is for proposing that a website be unlisted; please add new entries at the bottom of the section. Use a suitable 3rd level heading and display the domain name as per this example {{LinkSummary|targetdomain.com}}.

Remember to provide the specific domain blacklisted, links to the articles they are used in or useful to, and arguments in favour of unlisting. Completed requests will be marked as {{removed}} or {{declined}} and archived.

See also recurring requests for repeatedly proposed (and refused) removals.

Notes:

  • The addition or removal of a domain from the blacklist is not a vote; please do not bold the first words in statements.
  • This page is for the removal of domains from the global blacklist, not for removal of domains from the blacklists of individual wikis. For those requests please take your discussion to the pertinent wiki, where such requests would be made at Mediawiki talk:Spam-blacklist at that wiki. Search spamlists — remember to enter any relevant language code

thinktransportation.net

Think Transportation is one of the premier know consultancy firm in the filed of transportation and knowing the fact that this been listed as spam is disappointing, it has many resources available specially for public transit and I wanted to use some of it's reverences, https://thinktransportation.net/red-bus-karachi/ . I appreciate if your assistance in this regard. --103.72.87.126 10:06, 15 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Declined the link is blocked by en:MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist, not by the global spam blacklist. Your request will likely be declined on enwiki as well, as your website doesn't seem to be useful per en:Wikipedia:External links and you seem to have a conflict of interest. --Johannnes89 (talk) 11:51, 15 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

pro-don.dspl.ru

I wanted to add a link to the pro-don.dspl.ru/Memevent/Details/5 page, but I received a message that the site was on the spam list. This is a local history project of the Don State Public Library "Don Pages" (RU: "Донские страницы"). The site looks like a pretty decent and useful source. The reason for blocking, as far as I understand, is the untargeted blocking of domain names starting with “pro-” with this line of the global spam list: \bpro-(?!(goroda|speleo|otdyh|box)). *?\.ru\b. Please exclude pro-don.dspl.ru from blocked sites.--Yellow Horror (talk) 09:58, 1 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

comicradioshow.com

I wanted to add a link to an interview (http://www.comicradioshow.com/Article1105.html) as a reference in ca:Strangers in Paradise, but it appears a message of blacklist. When asked on the Requests for administrators page, they told me it's not in a local blacklist but in the global one and I was suggested to request it here. However, I don't understand how come it's global, since the same link appears in the German article de:Strangers in Paradise. Thanks in advance. --Judesba (talk) 07:44, 2 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Judesba the link was locally whitelisted at dewiki years ago [3][4]. You could ask local admins to add the link to ca:MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist if it doesn't get removed from the global blacklist. --Johannnes89 (talk) 08:07, 2 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Johannnes89: after 15 years and now broadening use, I feel that this may be one of the cases where we can remove from the blacklist. Looking at the report that blacklisted it, and the site now it seems to have matured, and I think that that is probably one that we could set to monitor when COIBot comes back.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:05, 16 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

This link is blocked by Violet the spam policy but we didn't do any spam or even we do not make any edits that violate the policy I think this was done by our competitors because they saw the edits go from multiple IPs so I request you to remove our domain from your black list because its' hampers website's reputation. we apologize for the mistake that happened and will take care of this in the future and not do any kind of violation in Wikipedia again. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Jainpriyanka019 (talk) 06:14, 8 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Per our guidelines, we „de-blacklist sites when trusted, high-volume editors request the use of blacklisted links because of their value in support of our projects“ and typically „do not remove domains from the spam blacklist in response to site-owners' requests“. This is by the way not the first time a site owner claims the spamming has been done by their competitors.
The request should be declined, I will leave this open for another admin to decide though, since I added the link to the SBL. --Johannnes89 (talk) 06:25, 8 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your valuable response i completely agree with your words but my business got hamper due to this happens i just request to you or sincerely appolgize for what happens in past it's first mistake so i request to you please ignor this time and will take care of this in near feature and take whole responsibility for the feature please remove my domain this time if possible.
thanks Jainpriyanka019 (talk) 10:53, 8 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Jainpriyanka019:  Declined This is exactly what the spamblacklist is for, spam betting sites like yours can never possibly be used anywhere constructively (at least for now based on the notablity of your company is unlikely to meet any inclusion guidelines on any wiki). We will not hesitate to blacklist your competitors sites if they come out. I do take your apologies but I do not know when your competitors will sabotage your company again by adding the link back again, and absent any firm evidence that the link will never be added again, or is it useful, I will decline this request. Best, Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 14:59, 12 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Jainpriyanka019: Further to Camouflaged Mirage's, your business interests are none of our concerns. Our blacklisting in no way stops people using any site, it simply stops the addition of the domain name to our sites. We will continue to block spammers, and blacklist problematic domains.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:13, 16 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

about.com

This website used to contain much legitimate content that can still be accessed via the Internet Archive. This wholesale blocking of the whole domain is causing many issues in various Wikipedias that had content that linked to it. This needs to be more targeted. At the very least, it should allow links via the Internet Archive through. DHN (talk) 23:59, 16 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Regarding the blacklisting see Talk:Spam blacklist/Archives/2023-01#about.com and en:Wikipedia:Link rot/URL change requests#about.com usurped and wiki blacklisted. It seems indeed useful to allow Internet Archive links of about.com, I recommend locally whitelisting them like enwiki [10] or dewiki [11] Johannnes89 (talk) 06:30, 17 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

@DHN: The about.com website no longer exists as a target, it is all now redirects and is being spammed by spambots, plus there is no longer certainty that the data at the end of the link is the cited reference, so the site has been usurped. The blacklisting only should be impacting new link additions. We know that the blacklisting can cause issues on talk pages where links are being archived, and that is completely manageable by each wiki in a number of ways, either to neuter the url itself, or to make its decision about whether it puts in a temporary or permanent whitelist for that domain to manage that archiving, or to allow those link additions, either for the full domain or a regex for archive\.org/.+about\.com/. I will have a think about whether we can write a suitable regex to blacklist about.com but let through archive.org variants.<pThere is no capability to global whitelist with a workaround url for the global blacklist, if you think that such should exist, then it will need to be a phabricator: request for that designed capability. >I do have global sysop access and can assist at WPs within that control space as required.  — billinghurst sDrewth 02:17, 18 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Troubleshooting and problems

This section is for comments related to problems with the blacklist (such as incorrect syntax or entries not being blocked), or problems saving a page because of a blacklisted link. This is not the section to request that an entry be unlisted (see Proposed removals above).
