A cat who helped people through their most difficult moments has been laid to rest at the graveyard he made his home.
Ginger moggy Barney lived at St Sampson’s Parish cemetery in Guernsey for at least 20 years, and was a ‘great comfort to many’.
His family used to live nearby, but when they moved away he decided to come back to his old territory, where he was looked after by parish staff.
He was a familiar sight for people attending funerals or coming in to lay flowers for their loved ones, and his passing yesterday has touched many who remember him.

‘I always felt my young daughter was never alone when he was there. Really going to miss you, Barney’, one mother wrote on Facebook.
Another woman wrote, ‘God bless you Barney, remember that lovely sunny afternoon, I laid down on the grass in the cemetery & we cuddled up together for 2 hours, I needed a friend that day & there you were my angel!! God bless you.’
‘RIP Barney now you will be keeping our loved ones safe on the other side,’ one mourner said.

Barney died aged 20 on Friday evening from old age and Alan confirmed he has been laid to rest at the place where he helped so many others.
The parish put a death notice for Barney in the local paper and has commissioned a plaque and a bench in his memory.
RIP Barney.
