All you need to know about muscle twitching
Ever since Katy Perry’s eye twitching video has gone viral, her fans are wondering what happened to her and why did she suffer from eye twitching and if her muscle was damaged. Before we move ahead, let’s have a look at what happened with her at a Fashion week.

So, what exactly is muscle twitching?

This muscle twitching is often known as muscle fasciculation. Twitching basically is muscle contractions taking place in your body. Since muscles are controlled by your nerves, if your nerves get damaged your muscles tend to twitch. As for eye twitch, it usually occurs in the upper lid. Usually eye twitching is a mild effect like a gentle tug, however some could feel it severely causing both the lids close immediately.

What are the causes of muscle twitching?

Some of the causes could include:

Stress and anxiety usually leads to mental health issues. It can lead to ‘nervous tic’. They can tend to affect any muscle in your body.

    • Dehydration:
Dehydration can lead to muscle contraction or twitching especially at the larger parts of the body.

    • Irritation:
Irritation of the eye lid or even the surface of the eyes can usually cause muscle spasms that can occue around the eyes.

    • Not getting enough sleep:
This is one of the most common causes of muscle twitching. It can alter levels of neurotransmitters, that often produce muscle spasms.

What is the treatment of muscle twitching?

Usually muscle twitching doesn’t require a serious treatment because it usually heals in a few days. However, if this twitching doesn’t heal itself in a few days, there are some treatments you can opt for. Some drugs that your doctor might suggest you are-

    • Corticosteroids, like Celestone and prednisone (Rayos)
    • muscle relaxants, like Carisoprodol and cyclobenzaprine (Amrix)
    • cognitive behavioral therapy or anxiety medications for underlying mental health issues

How can you prevent muscle twitching?

Preventions are better than cure. So to avoid the treatments, there are few ways via which you can prevent muscle twitching.

One way to keep your nervous system and muscles in check is by keeping your mind in check. In order to do that, you need enough sleep. Have a sound sleep every day to avoid this twitching.

    • Have a balanced diet:
Have enough vegetables and fruits throughout your day. Also add whole grains that will allow you have enough carbohydrates for energy throughout the day.

    • Avoid stress:
As mentioned, stress is a cause of muscle twitching. We know it’s easy said than done but try to avoid as much stress as possible so your muscles will also be in check and nerves in control.

    • Quit smoking:
Smoking anyways is injurious to health. Nicotine is a mild stimulant that affects your central nervous system. If you quit smoking, it will also avoid other serious health issues that you might face.

Always remember, never avoid red flags especially when health is concerned. Always consult a doctor to avoid any serious issues
