Invicta FC strawweight champ Virna Jandiroba’s grappling was simply too much for Janaisa Morandin in the headliner of Invicta FC 31.
Jandiroba (14-0) ran a clinic on Morandin (10-2) in the opening frame before a quick advance netted an arm-triangle at the 2:23 mark of the second round.
Invicta FC 31 took place Saturday at Scottish Rite Temple in Kansas City, Mo. The entire card streamed on UFC Fight Pass.
Jandiroba let Morandin give her best look on the feet for about 90 seconds before a takedown put her in control. The champ advanced position with ease, firing off short elbows and resisting reversal efforts. Although she gained mount, she wasn’t satisfied staying put, battering the challenger from a variety of positions.
Morandin thumped Jandiroba to the body early in the second, and when the inevitable takedown came, she met the champ with a knee. Jandiroba simply absorbed it and got in position. Once again, it didn’t take her long to advance. But this time, she secured the fight-ending choke.
Champ Jandiroba now has a first defense under her belt and remains unbeaten with 14 wins, while Morandin drops to 1-2 in Invicta FC.
Gonzalez has all the answers for Firmino, calls for title shot
Every time Daiane Firmino tried to halt Pearl Gonzalez’s momentum, she found herself in a bad position.
Even when Firmino outgrappled Gonzalez in the final frame of the three-round affair, she was unable to capitalize, and Gonzalez took home a unanimous decision.
A string of reversals began in the first frame when Gonzalez turned an early takedown into top position on the mat. When Firmino got back to her feet, she pressed Gonzalez to the cage and again gave up the advantage. Gonzalez got a little too carried away throwing knees and wound up on the mat. But Firmino ran out of time before she could score.
The Brazilian tried to make things right early in the second, coming out with a flurry of punches. But when she got too close, Gonzalez pulled off a head-and-arm throw and then threatened Firmino’s arm with a lock from side control. When that didn’t produce a tap, she tried a Von Flue choke.
Gonzalez again spilled to the mat on a knee in the final round, and with four minutes to go, Firmino had her best chance to make something happen. She held top position through one reversal attempt and worked limited ground and pound. It wasn’t long, though, before Gonzalez threw up an armbar and elbowed her way to the final bell.
Gonzalez (9-3) afterward called for a flyweight title shot, having won her third straight Invicta FC bout. Firmino (10-3) sees a three-fight streak snapped.
Spangler punches, bleeds her way to decision win
Less than five minutes into her fight with Shanna Young, Lisa Spangler’s nose was leaking blood.
The injury might have damaged the bantamweight’s face, but it didn’t slow her down. She continually pressed through the fast kicks of her opponent to earn a split decision.
Young kept a steady pace of kicks, bloodying Spangler’s face with a shot to the head. Spangler tried to get inside to land heavy punches. The two traded heavy shots as Spangler walked down Young and tried to absorb incoming attacks. By the end of the round, she managed to corner Young and land a flurry of punches.
Spangler continued to wing heavy hooks in Young’s direction as Young countered with jabs and front leg kicks. When a rarely-seen axe kick conked Spangler’s head, she pushed the action into the fence and went for broke. Young got free and landed more kicks upstairs, but also took her fair share of counters.
After two closely contested rounds, Young started the frame with front kicks to the body and face. Spangler again charged in and made it a brawl, flurrying against the cage. Young’s front kick continued to land, forcing Spangler to close. A kick sweep offered Spangler her best chance to end the fight as she transitioned to mount and back control. Young, though, got back to her feet and turned up the tempo with hard jabs and a lead elbow. Spangler responded in kind and was setting up for a choke when time ran out.
Spangler (3-0) protects her undefeated pro record with a third win, while Young (4-1) suffers her first loss in five bouts.
Martin overcomes tough first round, takes over for ground-and-pound win
Strawweight Ashley Nichols’ fast hands were on display early as she dropped Mallory Martin with a right hand in the first minute of the fight. Martin went into survival mode, attempting to pull guard and smothering Nichols against the fence. A takedown soon followed, and Martin reasserted control on top with ground and pound.
Martin didn’t waste time trying to get the fight back to the mat, but Nichols used a whizzer to keep herself upright. After a struggle against the fence, Martin finally got the job done. When her workrate stalled, the two were stood up, and Nichols gained back some ground in exchanges.
After a short skirmish on the feet, Martin again exposed Nichols’ deficiencies in grappling and took over. With Nichols trapped against the cage, Martin fired down elbow after elbow until referee Greg Franklin stepped in to stop the fight.
Martin (4-2) has now won three straight after a pair of setbacks, while Nichols (3-3) drops her second consecutive bout in the Invicta cage.

As soon as flyweight Miranda Maverick (4-1) took down Victoria Leonardo (2-1), she took over the fight.
Maverick advanced to mount against and took an arm when Leonardo bucked her off, adjusting with a scramble to go belly-down. Maverick later said the arm popped many, many times, but Leonardo eventually was forced to tap.
