Why choose a Breast Enlargement?

Patients who consider breast enlargement surgery are typically seeking a larger cup size for one of the following reasons:

  • Their breasts didn’t fully develop to their desired size during puberty

  • To increase self-esteem and confidence

  • To enhance what they already have and achieve a fuller size

  • Loss of volume, shape and fullness following pregnancy or weight loss

  • They are suffering from asymmetry or tubular breasts and want to improve the appearance and symmetry of their breasts

  • Patients who identify as transgender and are looking to achieve a larger breast size

Breast Enlargement Surgery

Breast enlargement surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and usually takes between 30 minutes to 1 hour in theatre. Depending on the surgeon's recommendations and your personal preference, there's an option to be a day patient or stay overnight to recover in one of our MYA hospitals.

A small incision will be made along your breast crease (between 2-3 inches long) to insert the breast implants. This incision will be closed with dissolvable or non-dissolvable sutures (stitches) depending on the technique and preferences of your surgeon. A dressing will be placed on these which must not be removed until your post-operative appointment at your local clinical hub with a MYA nurse.

Breast Enlargement Surgery Recovery

Patients should expect bruising and swelling to the breasts and surrounding areas and may experience tightness, discomfort and sensitivity following their procedure. Pain should subside after 7-14 days and pain relief will be prescribed to ease any discomfort.

Boob job patients typically take around 6-8 weeks to heal from the procedure, with it taking up to one year to see the final result. The breast implants may initially sit quite high on the chest, but over time, will gradually drop and fluff.

Following breast augmentation surgery, you will be required to wear a post-op surgical bra for 6-8 weeks, day and night. Some patients are advised to, or feel more comfortable, wearing their compression garment or a sports bra until they are fully healed.

Some surgeons may require you to wear a breast band or use strapping over the post-op bra to encourage dropping and fluffing and provide extra support for the breasts. It's essential that patients follow the advice given by their cosmetic surgeon to follow their personal treatment plan.

Scarring is a natural part of breast augmentation surgery, so it's nothing to worry about. They will fade over time and become less visible as you heal.

Breast surgery patients can expect to go back to work after 1 week, or as advised by their surgeon.

After a breast augmentation, heavy lifting and strenuous exercise aren't advised. Instead, it's recommended that you take it slow to prevent the breast implant from rupturing or moving around.

Breast Implant Options

Every patient’s breast enlargement journey is different, our specialist breast augmentation surgeons will recommend the best implant size and placement for you based on your physical requirements, body shape, existing breast tissue and your desired result.

  • Size –Breast implants are measured in cubic centimeters (orCC’sfor short), not in cup sizes, for example: 350cc or 400cc.

  • Shape –There are two shapes of implants round or anatomical (also known as teardrop).

  • Placement–The placement of breast implants refers to whether the implant is placed under the muscle, over the muscle or partially between both, described as submuscular, subglandularand subfascial.

  • Profile/Projection –The profile ofbreastimplantsrefers to how much it projects forward when you are standing and is described as low, moderate, highorultra highprofile.

Where will the breast implant be positioned?

The placement of the breast implant during a breast enlargement is different for every patient. It either goes under the muscle, above the muscle, or partially between both.

  • Subfascial - Placing the implant between the connective tissue (fascia) of the muscle helps to reduce the risk of rippling and prevent the appearance of a prominent profile, as the muscle movement covering the implant helps to soften the overall look of the breast.

  • Subglandular - This is a popular choice amongst patients, as the recovery is often less painful. This is usually recommended to patients who have sufficient breast tissue to fully cover the implant.

  • Submuscular - Placing the implant underneath the muscle helps reduce the risk of rippling, capsular contracture and ensures a smoother clavicle to the nipple. This is often recommended to those who have little breast tissue and need an extra layer of support over the implant for a smooth look.

During your initial and surgeon consultation, you will be given more information on the advantages and disadvantages of each placement. Your MYA surgeon will then decide on the best option for you and your breasts.
