Music is a special type of gift. It is a powerful gift that we can not see. Music offers comfort and serenity when we need it most. helps people when they are at their lowest of lows. It also brings more joy and happiness to exciting life events, such as weddings. Music is one of the most under-appreciated “gifts” we receive. I’m about to share with you a “gift of music” that is slightly different. My mother was so excited to share this with me. She does a daily reading every morning from her book, “In Moments Like These” by David Jeremiah. She said that as soon as she read it, she immediately thought of me and even made some notes in the book to remind her to share it with me.

The crazy thing is that the date for this passage was one month to the day that I decided to start a blog about music and how it influences our minds and mental wellbeing! The universe works in mysterious ways. I’m a firm believer that things happen for a reason. This was a gift brought to me through my mother as an affirmation. It was as if the universe was letting me know that I was getting a big thumbs up for writing on the topic that I’m blogging about. Such a beautiful gift that required no wrapping!

The Gift That Keeps On Giving

Just think about the passage from my mother’s book that I shared. Music has been in our lives since birth. It is one of our constants. One of my fondest memories as a child involves my mother singing to me as she tucked me in to bed for the night. Every night. Did your parents sing you a bedtime song while putting you to bed when you were a child? Do you do that now for your own children? Why?

Because it’s soothing to the soul. Any anxieties that I may have had would disappear as my mother’s voice would comfort me in song. But not only did it benefit me as a child, but it benefited her as well. She took comfort knowing that I was calm and content, going to sleep in a pleasant mood. Knowing that probably helped her sleep better at night. No one can sleep well knowing that their child is upset or anxious! So it’s a win-win.

Where Did This Knowledge Come From?

Does it say in any handbook to “sing your child to sleep” or “sing to your child when they are sick or sad?” I could very well be wrong, but I highly doubt it is written anywhere. So how do we know to do it? According to this BBC News article, the first lullabies on record are dated around 2,000 BC. Now I KNOW there were DEFINITELY no parent handbooks back then! So how did they know to sing to children to sooth them?

My guess is that it had to be innate. It soothed the parent AND the child. Singing is a gift that brings joy and happiness (well, unless it is me singing to you, you might not actually experience “joy”). Not only is the music a gift to the child, but it is a gift to the parent. We experience this gift and want to carry it on. These children then grow up and become parents. Then they are the ones sharing the gift of music with their own children.

The Gift of Music: The Prescription Where No Insurance Is Required

I’m not a doctor. Far from it. I’ll never pretend to be one. There is no MD, PhD, or PSYCH at the end of my name. What I have blogged about and will continue to research and write about is a topic that interests me. Using music as therapy is something that I feel will improve my own mental wellness and will hopefully help anyone who follows my blog. Is it the antidote to all of life’s problems and the cure for all ailments and diseases? No. But could we experience any benefits from listening to music? Yes. The nice thing about music? There really aren’t any bad side effects! I mean you may experience ringing in the ears if you have your music on too loud. But there is no small print, full page list of side effects or a 60 second long explanation of horrible side effects of music. And no, you do not need to call your doctor right away if you are experiencing the effects of music longer than 12 hours!

Tonight, I’m going to take my nighttime dose of music and share this gift with you. I’m adding this to my Personal Playlist page. Our musical prescription this evening…
